Mary Poppins Returns - 4.8m

... huh. Guess matinees were stronger than night shows. That's not very good tbh.

I would say it's actually a very good number.

This was estimated to make $7-$8M by Deadline, so seeing these numbers in comparison is definitely disappointing IMO. That said it's still really early and for all we know this movie could explode over the weekend.

I initially thought that this would open soft and explode over Christmas week, so that'll likely happen but we'll see.

These numbers are really not surprising when you look the hype outside of the internet. Kids were not excited about seeing a woman flying around on an umbrella singing and dancing with cartoons. This is a new generation and what work worked for the original Mary Poppins is not going to translate into General audiences today. And it also doesn't help that songs are forgettable and boring. It's also interesting that this got a A minus cinemascore which is pretty low for family Disney film I mean even Christopher Robbins got an A. And it also doesn't help that two family friendly films are opening tomorrow.

Really?
One year ago Jumanji did $7.2M+$1.86M from Amazon Prime previews.

If Poppins underpeforms Disney really should've just released Solo in December.

If you wanted it to make 400+ million, then I guess, no, but if you had realistic expectations, then yes.... Kind of subjective.

Underwhelming number. It will need very strong legs to get it to over $250m.

It’s way too early considering the unusual release pattern to declare anything yet. It could make anywhere from 150-300m based on this number.

You guys realize that Greatest Showman did half that number, right?

Jumanji is a much worse comparable. It appeals to dudes of all ages plus families. Dudes are not excited about Mary Fucking Poppins. No one should ever have expected Jumanji numbers.

I was about to say this. Poppins was always the blocker. Victims of their own success.

That said these type should of films tend to do well over the Christmas period so although 300m looks out of reach - 200/250m is still very possible.

It basically has the entire market for anyone not looking for an action movie for the entire stretch until mid January.

Yeah remember when we all thought The Greatest Showman was a flop? I'm not worried about MPR at all. It's going to pick up very well starting Christmas day. January is super weak too. Will play well into the new year.

Greatest Showman was an "original" musical and was a WoM/music phenomenon. Poppins is a sequel to an iconic film. Doubt Poppins will do that kind of multiplier but I do think it'll do very well next week.

Greatest Showman didn’t become a phenomenon until the new year. It only started having crazy drops after New Years. I’m not saying it’s going to do a 20x multiple like that did, just saying I don’t expect a big drop tomorrow

I think Poppins has questionable appeal to males and a lot of adults. Might be under 200 mil

TGS owns the biggest jump % wise on its second weekend for a movie in 3000+ theaters. Now I'm not singing doom for MPR but a sequel to a Disney's beloved classic is definitely not comparable to an original from Fox which is what pe#1 was mentioning in his post

The comparison to TGS stems from the fact that it opened on a Wednesday before the last full weekend before Xmas - it is a way to gauge potential multiplier from opening day.

Poppins has a slight advantage over TGS/Jumanji in that Xmas eve falls on Monday this year, so its Sunday drop will be much better than those movies. Xmas eve falling on Fri-Sun is always a slight disadvantage.

I can understand that comparison and I'm not against that but they are still different movies in terms of original vs sequel so naturally there is some frontloading with the later. Plus TGS did a lot better during holidays as well it was just overshadowed by Jumanji's numbers.
