Eh, not really. At least WB sold the rights to Netflix, Mortal Engines ain't getting any profit for Universal.

$751 pta for Vox Lux. Ouch. Probably won't even hit 1 million.

Solid for Spider-Verse, but its really going to need great legs from here on out. I really enjoyed it, but I don't know if it can survive the amount of competition coming up, especially since the family appeal for it is so low already. Very solid start for The Mule though and with the lack of films aimed at older audiences this month is should definitely play well throughout the holidays. Mortal Engines not even being able to crack $10M is super embarrassing though.

Universal ain't making a profit off that shit in any shape or form.

And WB didn't need to burn tens of millions on a worldwide marketing campaign.

Ben is Back is doing terrible but that will happen in limited release without any major award nominations this time of year. They honestly should have taken it into 600-1,000 theaters for Christmas. It has good reviews, takes place over Christmas, and it's not going to get any Oscar love so there's no point in waiting for that. If it couldn't even get in at the Globes it's not getting in at the Oscars. There's really no room for it. I think it could have done fine in wider release over Christmas break. They've certainly been advertising it a lot on TV. I've seen countless ads.

It's incredibly heavy and depressing. Not sure audiences are going to flock to it over the holidays even if it's fantastic, and even though it takes place over Christmas it's not exactly uplifting.

Am loving the Grinch's run.

Mary Queen of Scots should expand quicker. The numbers are solid but it's not going to get major Oscar nominations (The Favourite stole its spot as the period drama of the year) so they should just get it out in front of people during the Christmas season, and before The Favourite goes wide.

I mean it already is going to be in over 700 theaters for Christmas. That's definitely enough for it to do well over the Christmas period. The Favourite will be in 750 theaters.

Into the Spiderverse probably did a little less than expected, but one has to consider it's the fourth movie to be connected to the property in the last year and a half, it has a very gonzo premise for mainstream moviegoers, and when you look back at it, animated action adventure films (Or for want of a better way to put it, animated features for young boys) are actually a very hard sell, and have routinely brought down studios. Disney's Tarzan, arguably Lego Batman (Which people were still kind of like "That's it?" in terms of box-office), and maybe a couple Ralph Baskshi films back in the 70's?

This type of film doesn't usually get a theatrical release. It looks in the same vein as any animated Batman movie (Batman Ninja, Mask of Phantasm, etc.), and they all go DTV. So to make $35 million is a fucking huge, huge win. It's far exceeded my expectations (which were around $15m opening weekend), and I pretty much consider it the performance of the year.

Yeah, everyone (right or wrong) expected a performance comparable to The Lego Movie. It did just fine, but still kind of seemed like a disappointment.
