A nice 50k PTA for Mary. Not so much for Vox Lux and Ben Is Back.

Bohemian Rhapsody needs a 5x multiplier from this weekend to get to 200m. Probably won't happen but it'll get close. Crazy.

Grindelwald is borderline an actual flop. Worst drop among all holdovers from November and it's already slowing down a lot overseas and will get clobbered in the next few weeks by all the new films opening. It won't do much more than $600m WW.

WB fucking up yet another franchise with their (lack of) quality control.

Also regarding Bohemian Rhapsody, I find it crazy that a film that's so overtly gay (remember when people were afraid it would downplay that side of Freddie Mercury?) is a legit worldwide blockbuster. There's even a scene of him walking through a club surrounded by people in leather. Multiple kissing scenes, multiple romances, the aftermath of a cocaine orgy, it's all in there even if it's PG-13. I don't think there's any comparable film remotely close in terms of gross or attendance. What this means for future films I don't know. Outside of certain films in the 90s like Birdcage and Philadelphia, when it was a novelty factor, audiences around the world have largely stayed away from films with gay leads and/or featuring gay romance. Maybe Hollywood will consider it a one off and that people were willing to overlook it because it's Queen.

The gay aspect is part of package that comes with Freddie Mercury's popularity. Without it, I doubt his story would be as interesting and legendary.

Creed II passed The Fighter to become the 6th highest-grossing boxing movie ever. Soon it will take down Million Dollar Baby too, at which point the Top 5 will all be Rocky movies.

Grindlewald may not even reach Deatly Hallows II's OW. Embarassing. Not sure how they'll be able to make 3 more $200m budgeted films, never should've publically addressed the 5 film plan. I imagine it'll be cut to 4 films.

There seems to be a trend. Robin Hood 2018 may not even reach Robin Hood 2010's OW.

Not that it helps Grindelwald much, but Creed 2 fell big with actuals and actually ended up with the worst drop. I don't think the movie is catching on. Everyone I've talked to said it was good, but there was something off. Which was pretty much my review in a nutshell.

Grindelwald was always destined to drop regardless of quality. It just isnt that interesting a franchise.

Might just be the niche appeal of the franchise at this point. I know I still haven't been able to see it, but I will this week. It's doing well, but in the end it won't gross that much more than the first movie which isn't that encouraging when you want to start a franchise. If they make a third one I get the feeling it will definitely decrease, especially if Stallone isn't involved. Oh well it was good while it lasted, but this never going to be a blockbuster franchise anyways.

It is uninteresting Because the quality wasn’t there for this one. It still would have dropped a little with good WOM, but the third could have rebounded. Now the third will be lucky to crack 125m domestic.

I partly agree with this about mainstream audiences embracing a "gay film" in a way but you are greatly exaggerating the gayness. It's so tame. And in regards to gay kisses I swear there's like one, possibly two. And it's certainly nothing graphic. Battle of the Sexes was much more graphic and PG-13. Even had a sex scene that, for PG-13, was pretty racy. Granted that's lesbians and everyone is desensitized to lesbians.

Creed II is kind of having a lame run. It's only going to slightly out-gross the first. Won't even become the highest-grossing boxing movie. I'm glad it won't, but from that opening I thought it would.

I mean, the first had awards buzz/nominations. This won't. At least it's actually going to gross more than the first, unlike a lot of sequels.
