Is there a new type of opening record?
Is AVENGERS: ENDGAME the prime example for a new kind of opening record, which I will call the "afraid-of-spoilers-opening-record"?
Did the fear of spoilers lead to the unprecedented rush towards opening weekend/week?
If this record truly exists, does this mean that ENDGAME will see above average drops the following weekends?
And does this mean that ENDGAME's record will last for a really, really long time, as it will be extremely difficult to recreate such a fear of spoilers environment?
What do you guys think?

No, Infinity War was the first to set this “new record” thing. Endgame just destroyed that.

Re: Is there a new type of opening record?
Fear of spoilers is nothing new obviously, but I think there's a bit of a correlation between the number of films in a series and the leap in box office of the last one - no core fan wants to invest a huge amount of time and then risk a spoiler. We saw that with Harry Potter a bit. The only thing really novel here is just the sheer amount of films in the series and the time investment. We could well see the same thing happen with episode 9.

Re: Is there a new type of opening record?
Yes I think it is.
I for one went to see it on the second day of release - something i just about never do these days. And I did so because I feared spoilers. I know many others in the same boat.
The record will indeed last a long time. Event films that are a culmination of an 11 year build-up are rare so it will take a long time for this record to fall. It will happen off-course but Endgame should hold the OW record for longer than any film over the last 40 years.

I'm not willing to rule out episode 9. It's a hell of an uphill battle but it is a pretty damn big ending event and Star Wars set the opening day record with episodes 1,3,7.

I can't fathom Ep9 getting anywhere near EG. The number is just so insurmountable right now. Maybe 300 if you are crazy but I don't even see anywhere near that either.

I think ROS will open higher than TLJ but slightly under TFA - something like $240m which is still insane in December (though not as insane as it once was).
