Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
The anime also opened on a Wednesday so the opening would’ve been ever higher. Of course then its legs would be among the worst ever. It dropped 60% second weekend as is. Who does that in 1999?

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
The 1999 movie, which was basically a TV-quality cash grab, made $91m adjusted in five days.
Keep that in mind when predicting this.

Who does that in 1999? Yes i forgot it was a 5-day opener! I recall being shocked how big it opened and also shocked at how terrible the legs were. Very few films were that front loaded back then.

If it can pull The Muppets numbers that would be a major win

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
I think realistically the floor is like 70m OW if it can maintain hype. But it is still scheduled to come right between Avengers and Aladdin, neither of which have marketing in full swing, so it may be difficult to maintain the current hype.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
I was in theaters the weekend the first of the animated Pokémon movies opened and the theater was packed. Thar’s gold in in them their franchise.
Consider the immense nostalgic factor, continued popularity, and as someone mentioned, what looks like a bonafide live action Pokémon movie with a built in world.
$240m domestic is the floor.
Hope they don’t skimp on showing Pokémon battles. Yes that’s not the focus of this movie but you gotta pay fan service. The battle depiction should be more than that one scene in the trailer with the dragon Pokémon which looks like it might be a battle.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
The one thing that is conspicuously absent from the trailer is Pokeballs.
If they show that and Team Rocket in the next trailer, oh boy...

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
Can we stop using "the floor" as a thing.
It can easily make less than 70 million OW and gross under 240 million. I mean have some respect guys. Anything over 70 total would be great for this.

Pokemon is one of the biggest brands in the world and this film has 20+ years of pent up demand to see a live action version. Toy Story 3 only made $1b WW. It's really not that impossible. Don't get me wrong, I want this to be huge because I love Pokémon and I also liked the trailer, however it's not beating TS4, at least domestically

Lol Pent up Demand. Pokemon at best was a fad. Like Pogs or Yoyos to Tamagachis's and ferbys. If it was a legit Pokemon film it would flop in the states right now. Ryan Reynolds gives it a little bit of an edge. That's it.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
I am really hoping the hype for this does end up being overblown and people are dissapointed if it only makes something like a $150M domestic. I'll admit that after how Venom blew up its hard for me to discount the massive trailer views, but there is such a thing as setting your expectations too high.
It's way too early to start saying this will cross $200-$300M domestic.

The next Pokemon for Switch will probably be the highest selling game next year. And we saw with Pokemon Go how easily casual fans can drawn in with the true PokeLifers. It may not translate to success at the box office, but the fans are there for this to break out massively. I’ll make a crazy club if nobody else will.

zwackerm, don't be a knob. Claiming someone is trolling every time a difference of opinion is shared is really infantile. Thegun is also guilty of this, though. But it needs to stop.

That's a silly argument. That's like saying a Yoshi movie would make 300 million because Mario Kart is usually the most popular game. To this day only 2 video game adaptations have ever made more than 100 total, and Pokemon already had 5 chances. I'll give you inflation and say 150 million and that is extremely generous and if all goes right. But if you don't think this alienates the core fanbase then I can't convince you otherwise.

The movies were limited by quality, and I doubt many parents were interested in seeing it again. Simply making a movie parents won’t avoid doubles potential. And the age range is wider after all the years of sales.

Cheap crappy 2D animation movies = / = a mega budget live action film. This is Pokemon's 'Transformers 2007' moment.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
This probably alienates the core Japanese fanbase that love the 2D hand drawn look, but for western audiences it's all about 3D. Or did you mean it alienates the core fanbase because it's focusing on just Pikachu and not the group?

I'm clearly out of the loop. I thought the Pokémon phase died out a couple of years ago when the Pokémon Go craze subsided.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
Yeah this is definitely opening over $100M now. I was pessimistic before, but fans are really going to eat that trailer up. As for the casuals other than Godzilla and John Wick which are aiming for different audiences anyways nothing really looks that appealing in May, especially for family audiences. I mean do we really need to bring up Aladdin? Also, its coming out a good two weeks after Endgame which is great timing IMO.
