Halloween still has a slim chance to break the October record, but even if it doesn't, I still think its Sunday gross is underestimated. Regardless of what happens, that is such a fantastic opening. It may have a slim chance of making it to $200M if it holds well next weekend and after Halloween.

A Star is Born held very well despite huge competition (also R-Rated). With no competition next weekend, I expect it to easily have its best hold yet. Beating La La Land and The Greatest Showman domestically is a lock and $180-190M is doable. However, $200M isn't out of the question especially when its Oscar buzz is going well for it. Also, overseas is fantastic for it and may have a chance at beating LLL and TGS worldwide depending on how Japan does for it and if it earns a China release date.

Venom lost many of its premium screens but still avoided a 50% drop. Now $200M domestically is locked and may beat Solo which almost nobody predicted that before May.

First Man's run reminds of Cinderella Man (both have the second word in common in the title) except that it may miss $50M. A huge loser for Chazelle and everyone involved. With this type of drop, it'd be lucky to win Best Picture. Luckily, Halloween and the expected success of Grinch will make up for its lost profits for this one.

The Hate U Give is one of those films that could've done better or worse. However, its A+ Cinemascore and Saturday increase might leg it out to a modest $25-30M. At least it opened better than last year's unfortunate flop, Only the Brave.

Meanwhile, Mid 90s, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, The Sisters Brothers all made disappointing results.

You'd think ASIB would get a Chinese release. Germanotta is famous here, but that was some years ago and the Chinese mindset doesn't linger.

Actually Mid90s PTA ($62,000) was great, on par with Eighth Grade. Can You Ever Forgive Me? did slightly better than St. Vincent on OW and could leg it out like that film.

Amazing opening for Halloween. It's pretty fucking crazy that we have had two $75M+ openers this month on top of a $40M+ opener. It also looks like all three could be very close final gross wise as well as be insanely profitable for their respective studios. The fact that we can have three movies making this kind of money in October is astounding and most impressive of all is outside of Venom they were so inexpensive to make. Of course, there are always going to be casualties in competitive months like this, and that is unfortunately where Bad Times and First Man are right now.

Those two just aren't connecting at all.

Maybe if October becomes another blockbuster month, studios will have to think about releasing their awards/critical fare closer to the actual awards. Doesn't always pan out, but it is a little early to be thinking of awards runs in October. It's about finding that sweat spot. Don't do a Hostiles.

Is that a joke? Mid90's did fantastic. Also, The Sisters Brothers had only two showtimes daily at a lot of the theaters it expanded to which doesn't help. Wouldn't have made much of a difference anyway though. It's too late for that movie. They royally messed up its release.

A Star Is Born is on pace for 183m. It could improve on that with better drop next week. Plus holidays and awards.

Edit: that’s 189m. Added the wrong number.

You just know that Jonah Hill is the type of douche to now refer to himself as a filmmaker. I bet he's already edited his own Wiki page.

LOL, Hill is very nice and Humble by the way. I think you are just going from the characters he plays in a lot of films. And the movie is critically acclaimed and has done very great in limited release. Why can't he say he's a filmmaker in a non douche way?

And I doubt he would do that. Not really getting the point. You seem to have some kind of beef that just isn't coming across.

Weekday numbers are just what ASIB needs for 200m. Down 25% Thursday-Thursday. Won’t be long before it catches Halloween. Within a week went from 6 times the gross t less than double. Big drop coming for the horror movie, Halloween day or not.

lol, one of the first words he says is "filmmaker".

Dude, don't get ahead of yourself. You just made a very small indie that won't even finish with $10m worldwide. Grow a beard, put on glasses, he's acting as a filmmaker! He really needs to widen his vocabulary. Everything is "great" and an "experience", and everyone is the funniest and best person in the world. Like, c'mon Jonah, pick one! Not everyone can be your favourite person!
