Will Smith and his Genie carried the bulk of marketing for the film. Without him in the cast, I could see the film struggle even more at the box office.

Totally agree. He's not the Will Smith of 1996 - 2004 but he still carries weight.

It was too popular with too many trailer views not to do well. Shouldn't be a surprise. The online reaction to the genie didn't really matter and didn't involve the target audience anyway.

At $810m WW now. Japan may be the key in pushing it close/over a billion.

Man what a comeback story this movie is. No matter how big FFH or LK are this is easily the most impressive performance all summer, although everything else being so shitty helps.

Will Smith has been very smart to find a new niche playing high-profile supporting roles in big franchise blockbusters. It lets him keep his A+-list movie star status while not having to carry the whole weight of a film on his diminished drawing power.

At $813.2m with actuals.

Japan and US alone should push it to 900m. Would be irritating if it barely missed a billion.

Great that people love the film, wonder if this will get a sequel?

Better marketing and release date and this does 30% more both domestic and overseas.

If they do a sequel, just skip straight to Aladdin and the King of Thieves.

I mean... if they went for a Maleficent sequel surely this should get one. Definitely want one for this over Jungle Book.

They'll definitely make sequels to this. Hopefully they don't rush them though.

Guess they may wait until Maleficent 2's performance before deciding on the sequel.

At $880m.

Japan and US alone should be good for another $60m+ million.
