Weekend eight update:
10. A Star is Born $3,005,000 -30.0% (Theater count 1,202/-808) PTA $2,500 Total $191,005,173
15. Venom $780,000 -60.5% (Theater count 585/-722) PTA $1,333 Total $211,707,620

A Star is Born continues to leg out while Venom is rapidly running out of gas. The difference is now just over 20 million, and all award nominations have yet to be announced.

This may still happen.

It should happen. It's gonna get another 10 or 20 just because of all the Oscar noms like 10+.

And it looks like Venom is coming out in three weeks on DVD, while A Star is Born's DVD release hasn't even been announce yet, they'll hopefully wait until at least February in order to make more bank.

Weekend 10:

11/12 A Star is Born $2,530,000 +38.3% 1,631 +550 $1,551 $197,118,597
17/18 Venom $305,000 -19.2% 388 -37 $786 $212,716,166

The difference is down to $15,597,569. I do not believe this will be the last time WB bumps A Star is Born given that the lack of reviews for The Mule indicate that ASIB is their Oscar contender.

Those who 'lost' (thought ASIB>Venom) shouldn't feel bad. It was a close race!

Surely Born will play all through Oscar season. Venom is done in a few weeks.

My guess is ASIB will be out on DVD by the time nominations are announced. So Venom will win

If A Star is Born is one of the top nominees, as it seems likely to be, it can squeeze another 15 million out of the next two months.

It certainly should make it. It will get 7+ nominations and possibly 2 or 3 wins. That should be enough to keep it afloat.

Of course it's making it. Just some people every year don't have foresight and think $15m is a huge advantage. Usually I'm one of those people, but this will easily make it.

It wasn’t just any bump, it was a one week only imax debut. It lost its theaters to the openers, and while it might expand in January, so many people have already seen it, that awards will draw in less of a new audience. At least it reached 200m.

It basically needs BP and BA oscar wins to ensure it gets past Venom now. Still a superb gross.

I'm pleased it's not passing it without Oscar help. But it should be good for Oscars, so it's definitely passing it.

Someone on BOT said it was going back to Dolby cinemas on Jan. 11th.

Not sure if that's actually the case.

My amc app says it’s expanding into Dolby screens this week. Its Been holding up really well and has a healthy pta. It seems to have more potential than I thought.

Well I need to see Aqua in Imax while it's there and I'm interested in checking out ASIB again in Dolby. Just must find time

The success of this club was always predicated on Warner Bros. investing in a series of expansions, nearly functional re-releases, that correspond with a studios big Oscar hopeful. Given the backlash to the Golden Globe winners of the past two years - & ASIB’s consistent strengths at all the union guilds - it’s in their best interest to keep beating the drum.

I honestly think the real story here isnt A Star is Born holding well but rather Venom’s over performance relative to expectations. Certainly my own.

From the end of November to now it has grossed a little less than $10 million and needs more than $10 million to beat Venom. I guess let's see how it expands after Oscar nins are announced

Well, I think Venom was certainly the likelier bet for $200m+ from conception to the months leading up to release.

Not every awards movie sees its pta increase like this. It’s pta hasn’t been this good since early November.

I think with the Oscar nominations next week there will be a new wave of interest. They should expand, there is still room for this film's audience to grow.

Algren is right. There is precedence of course for double digit revenue post-nomination (and usually when the weekend numbers are about where ASIB is now). It has a chance.

I looked up Spotlight, Moonlight and Shape of Water.

A Star Is Born is on itunes, for less than the price of two tickets. Even with a BP win it is not passing Venom.

Post subject:  Re: A Star is Born > Venom Total Domestic

I think a lot of the people who will seek out A Star is Born in theaters next month because of the Oscar nominations aren't the people who download a movie to watch at home for $20. For most people it's not really 'out' at home until February 19th.

With a month to go we're looking at ~9.5 million to go.

Pretty wild that A Star is Born has both increased AND increased it's PTA for the last three weekends in a row. It's showed up at more guilds than any other film so far.

It's not inconceivable that this club's success may come down to whether or not A Star is Born is perceived as one of the frontrunners after nominations. A snub for Lady Gaga or Bradley Cooper could keep it from building steam.
