Warner Bros seem to have dropped the ball big time with this. Horrible marketing and meh ticket sales. I am seeing 4.5m previews and high 30's to low 40's OW. That would be horrible considering it has very good reviews and Harley was seen in Suicide Squad(may be meh WOM of that movie did this in as well).

I'll take 40m opening at this point lol If the opening is soft I can't see it dropping hard next weekend but who knows. WoM won't be bad so hopefully it goes up. I can't believe this is opening to less than Shazam in a dead market.

I think the bad taste of Suicide Squad might have a hand in this movie doing subdued numbers. From trailers it looks like Harley is starting a new female suicide squad.

Re: Birds of Prey (&theFantabulousEmancipationofOneHarleyQui
I don't know if general audiences know that this is a SUICIDE SQUAD spin-off...
I think the lackluster response (in international markets so far) has more to do with the fact (with the exception of JOKER of course) that the last DC movies like WONDER WOMAN, AQUAMAN and SHAZAM looked like a fun time at the movies. BIRDS OF PREY looks more like over-the-top bubblegum... (and now that I think of it, is there any scene in the trailer in broad daylight?).
If there's a What-Went-Wrong thread this would be my answer....

Re: Birds of Prey (&theFantabulousEmancipationofOneHarleyQui
A thing I pointed out on BOT is that DC is going to now inherently struggle with "lesser" character movies. Because there is no connected universe, there isn't some obligation for fans to see these movies. Also, targeting the film at teen audiences, and making the film R probably didn't help, but plenty of films get over that. Maybe female audiences under 18 make up a small portion of that potential audience, as it seems like parents are more ok with letting their younger boys be exposed to adult subjects rather than their girls.

Is Harley a lesser character though? She’s probably the third most popular character in the Batverse which makes her more known than many of the heroes.

Re: Birds of Prey (&theFantabulousEmancipationofOneHarleyQui
its looking worse than yesterday. I wonder how low this can go. It could miss 30m if its frontloaded and early signs are not great.
WB basically dumped this movie with horrible marketing. Plus released this in south east asia at the height of corona virus scare. How stupid can they be.
I hope this kills any future Harley stand alone movies. They should rather use her in a Batman movie.

Less than Dark Phoenix makes absolutely no sense. Idk if it was the mismanagement of the movie overall (first trailer in October, late review embargo despite good initial reactions) but man.

Holy shit if this actually misses $30M OW. I never would have expected that, but that just goes to show you how much Warner Bros botched the marketing for this movie on top of the idiotic decision for them to hide the reviews.

WB is mostly to blame here, though the R-rating didn't help. Next weekend is guaranteed to be solid for the BO, so perhaps there's an element of people holding onto some funds.

If I'm remembering this correctly SS played the best with the under 25 segment, but I wouldn't say that the movie was all that well liked overall though, and the marketing for it just didn't look good enough to appeal to those outside of that audience.

Dark comedies don’t tend to do well unfortunately.
87% audience RT to start isn’t great, but if the IMDB of 6.7 is any indication WOM won’t help much.
At this point anyone should be happy with 90m. The chances of 100m look faint.

Would never have thought this would barely pass Alita. I thought 150m was doable despite the lack of appeal.

Especially female-led films like this one. CinemaScore is a B+. Not outstanding but pretty good. Should hold up fine. Upcoming competition isn't that bad.

Comic book movies usually get good CinemaScores. Few get worse than a B+.

I just feel the movie is good but not recommend worthy. I'm sure it will have a great second weekend but I don't think the interest was there for it to develop great legs. It should get a multiplier of 3 so $100m should happen but I don't see it doing much more than that. Next weekend Sonic will still distract a lot of audience as the next blockbuster.

Sonic is more for kids and families though. I don't know how many couples on a date for Valentine's Day would go to Sonic. There's definitely room for other movies to do well.

Re: Birds of Prey (&theFantabulousEmancipationofOneHarleyQui
I agree that a PG movie should not impact an R-rated movie though I feel that overall audience are moving towards blockbusters so I think Sonic will take away some audience even though not huge. As for Valentine's selection I would give Sonic the edge over BoP for being the new movie in the market specially if the reviews are good though either movie will not benefit greatly.
