Great openings for a sub 30 (The Nun) and sub 15 (Peppermint) RT score film.

Fantastic for The Nun.

Harsh drop for CRA. $200 m isn't a given at this point.

The Nun should reach $100m with this opening. Peppermint should be good for $25m-$30m total

Why wouldn't Peppermint make at least +$33m (2.5 multiplier) with this opening?

Horrible RT score + heavy competition in The Predator + A Simple Favor will probably lead to a ~60% drop next week.

Perhaps I just haven't been paying attention, but that seems pretty crazy for The Nun to me. What made it so much more appealing than a Conjuring or Annabelle release?

Holy shit. This series is the new Paranormal Activity, except with blockbuster level WW grosses. WB really cracked the code with this one.

I just realized The Meg will end up with well over $100m more than Solo globally. Lmao.

Plus it's September now. No boost from weekdays.

Yep and that the current competition for women is huge in the market. It's easy to open big but sustaining might become a problem in the end.

The difference between PA and Conjuring is that the spinoffs are doing so well. This helps to keep the series alive even when the main series will become stale.

I've mentioned this before but I think it's the IT effect more than increase in interest for Conjuring Universe movie. Think this September slot will become like January's patriotic movie slot for a few years.

So MI6 will become the biggest Mission Impossible film next week. Really great end of the run legs.

MI6 is running slightly behind MI5 weekends but it has slightly better weekdays to give it an edge in terms of overall week. Very interesting since last three weeks. The only difference is mostly MI6's Friday increase which is weaker rest of the days are generally better holds than MI5. Great performance overall. It should also overtake Ant-Man 2 next week to become 5th biggest movie of the summer

Absolutely HUGE numbers for The Nun. Crappy reviews or not this franchise just keeps printing money and I'm not expecting it to end anytime soon. It should easily cross $100M domestic even if it were to struggle getting there, and those massive OS numbers are just icing on the cake. Crazy Rich Asians had a big drop, but that should have been expected. It's not getting to $200M, but it really doesn't matter because it's already insanely successful.

Yeah, for a badly reviewed movie and a second spin-off series...and it outopens Conjuring?

:noway:

Did something point to this breakout? Trailer views or something?

This 53 million opening is straight up due to the goodwill and confidence in the series. I came away unimpressed but I'll still watch the forthcoming Annabelle 3 and Conjuring 3.

I guess their biggest test would be if they could do Amityville again and make it a big hit (Obviously they've always looked away from it because it's been done to death, but it is their biggest and most well known case)

The Conjuring series should focus on more true story investigations - plenty to choose from. It's what made the original so successful. I didn't mind Annabelle, The Nun was pretty bad, but I'll take a 'based on a true story' every time.

That was me. At least I'm taking credit.

I do think that this is the most ideal weekend to put a tent-pole horror film out. They discovered a decade ago that the first week of the new year was a great time for horror after all the feel good overload of Christmas and the empty marketplace for new films. The weekend after Labor Day holdovers plummet huge and it's a perfect time to kick off the horror season, especially if the summer was light on horror.

I'm also tired of nun puns. Have some religious respect for the love of God! From this point on, no more puns. Nun whatsoever, please.
