Re: Crazy Rich Weekend
Spike Lee may want to start dusting off his Oscar suit. Blackkklansman is definitely getting nods. Great hold this weekend. Also happy to Alpha came in on the high end of expectations. It may not be a financial success but quality wise is a winner.

A 5 multiplier for Wed-to-weekend is simply wonderful.

The demographic breakdown: -41% Caucasian -38% Asian -11% Hispanics -6% African-American -4% Other
-Female (68%) -Over 25 (64%)
Best romantic comedy showing since Trainwreck 3 years ago. That weekend multiplier over the summer is spectacular, and it will become a watercooler movie over the next few weeks that will start to skew younger and more diverse as the word gets out.

Re: Crazy Rich Weekend
Why would this have been front loaded? It’s not in any genre that has front loading. Well received comedies are never front loaded.

Well, it's not exactly a Django Unchained moment, and Spike Lee hasn't really been a factor in the Oscars since...um...???...but if there is no other racism-themed movie coming out this year that fits that slot, then this will probably have to do. On the Basis of Sex seems like it will fill the feminist slot, and Boy Erased the gay slot. Since they retconned the real-life attackers in Welcome to Marwen from interracial homophobes to all white neo Nazis, that will fit the anti semitism slot. All that's left is the pro media slot ala Spotlight and The Post. I find it interesting no films featuring Hispanic actors in main roles or dealing with the Hispanic American community, or set in Latin America, have made much of a splash in the last...decade?..considering they are the biggest minority. There's no Hispanic slot so far.

At a $9 average ticket price that's 1.45 million Asian Americans, so that means 7% of the total Asian American population of the US saw the film since Wednesday. Considering it's poised for a leggy run and it's a rom-com (not a four quadrant film), that's pretty impressive. I think the opening is a testament to how Asian Americans are getting more visibility in the US (this year a K pop band had the #1 album in the US for a week), and that Cinderella type plotlines are always a reliable sell. It's the same appeal as 50 Shades, Princess Diaries, etc. It's easy to sell the fantasy of a normal girl that gets swept up in a glamorous adventure with a handsome guy that everyone wants but settles for her.

Re: Crazy Rich Weekend
Could see a We are the Millers multiplier which would be insane.
16 movies so far with $100m grosses (Not counting Rampage which closed with $99.346m)
