See this is another unfair points gain. Chippy predicts $47m for Spider's Web and gets 3 points for it. He'll be lucky to get within $20m of the actual gross (which will be HALF the movie's total gross).

And I think I should probably get some points for predicting $255m for The Grinch. Only $15m away from the projected final total. Not even 1 point?!! It's a MUCH better prediction than Chippy's $47m for GitSW!!!

But there are 6 people that are closer to the projected final result and this game rule is that the six closest get points. Btw, it's still early, but if legs aren't that good, you may get points for your Grinch prediction.

The way you want it is like the game I once did, where the closest one got 3 points, the second closest one two and so on.
I could do another one if there is interest, but don't expect the flashy MGKC charts and the like. I'm stuck in ancient time and still use an abacus and the like.

I know the rules. I am just highlighting a fault in the game. It's less about predicting the movie and more about predicting what others will predict, which is not the way I predicted at all - and I'm losing out because of it.

Post Re: KJ's Fall/Winter Box Office Contest 2018 - Pts Update 11
Correct - it's always been about predicting a movie's total gross better than the others.

You can try to predict "better" based on what others are predicting, but it's likely not going to help much. Some movies that we predict don't have a very wide range of predictions. You could to play the odds by having one of the 6 lowest or 6 highest predictions for it, but it could just as easily strike right in the middle of everyone's predictions.

I'm definitely not opposed to having a separate bonus for each movie if you successfully predict within 5% of a movie's actual gross, or something to that effect.

You should give yourself 3 points for Night School, MGKC.

Also, looking at FB2 performance, right now it seems only David has still chance of getting the top 5 right.

I completely screwed up my Creed II prediction. But so did everyone else not named stuffp, so I'm still in the top tier (I think). I see it going north of $175m, so I should get points for my $125m prediction (which is crazy, btw).

Though I feel this my peak. Will lose my first place points for Venom very soon. It’s too bad I didn’t switch that and Mary Poppins. :funny:

I actually don't get points for Night School, as devon28flick's true prediction for it is $83.7 million, meaning I don't tie him in closeness.

Post Re: KJ's Fall/Winter Box Office Contest 2018 - Pts Update 12
I had a feeling that no one would get the top 5, despite all being different (though it's not over yet). Just too many movies too close to the same size, and there's almost always at least one big breakout and/or one big disappointment that is nigh impossible to predict that demolishes the vast majority of predictions. Still, it's part of the fun of this game.

To illustrate how hard the top 5 is to get right... Say everyone can predict the rank of every movie within 2 in either direction (so the movie you predict for rank 1 will be rank 1-3, rank 2 will be rank 1-4, rank 3 will be rank 1-5, rank 4 will be rank 2-6, etc). Even in this idyllic scenario, there are 103 different possible top 5 combos. Even if everyone got number 1 right in this scenario, there are still 43 ways for the rest of the top 5 to play out. If you could predict every movie within 1 rank in either direction though, that would bring the number of possible top 5's all the way down to 13.

Nobody will get #10 as it's going to be The Mule. If it opens with as much as I think it will this weekend it's likely hitting 100 Million.
