Post KJ's Fall/Winter Box Office Contest 2018 - FINAL RESULTS
Image

KJ's Fall/Winter Box Office Contest 2018

This one should be really fun - we have no clear #1 movie for this season!

Also - we have a couple changes to this game:
1) The Top 5 point rule has changed. You get 1 point if you name a movie that ends up in the top 5. You score another point for that movie if you guess its rank correctly. The bonus for a perfect top 5 has changed from 15 points to 10 points. (Check out the rules section if you're confused.)

2) We will be predicting a record 35 movies this season. There's just so many that are interesting to predict, that I wanted to include them all. This means if you win this season, you will go down as one of the best predictors on this website.

The season's contest covers movies released from September 7th, 2018 to December 28th, 2018. The player with the most points at the end of the game will receive a $25 gift card.

How the Points Work
Spoiler: show
Each player predicts the total domestic box office grosses of 35 movies listed further below. It's the ultimate test in box office predictions: guessing a movie's potential final gross before the season even starts with few, if any, tracking numbers. For each movie, the top 25% of players who predicted most accurately will get 3 points a piece.

Players can also score bonus points. The first is the Top 5. Each players will predict the season's five biggest films. Each movie that you include in your top 5 predictions that ends up somewhere in the top 5 scores 1 point. Each movie that you correctly predict its top 5 rank scores an additional 1 point. An extra bonus of 10 points is given to any player who correctly predicts the Top 5 perfectly. (This has still never been done in the 5+ year history of this game.) Only the 35 movies (and 2 backup movies) that are being predicted are contenders for our Top 5 point system.

Finally, players predict the answers to ten box office questions. A correct answer scores 2 points.

Ties in overall points are broken by who has the lowest total difference between each of their movie predictions and the actual total.

Release changes
TOTAL GROSS PREDICTIONS - Backup movies are in place in case any of the 25 predicted movies change their release date. (Once a movie moves its release date outside our season window, the first backup movie listed comes into play.)
TOP 5 PREDICTIONS - Only the 35 predicted movies (and 2 backup movies) are eligible for the Top 5 ranking, so no blockbuster that gets released last-minute into the season will be eligible. If a movie that appears in over 30% of Top 5 predictions moves out of the season, then affected players' Top 5 predictions will be automatically adjusted with what was their next highest-predicted movie.
BOX OFFICE QUESTIONS - A box office question will be voided in the following scenarios:
-The movie with the release date change is specifically mentioned in the question
-The movie with the release date change appears in over 30% of player responses to the question

There's a good chance Mary Poppins or Aquaman might not hit number 1 and still be number 1/2/3 of the season. My current guess is Aquaman will be number 1 from the 21-23 and Mary Poppins will be number 1 over the 28-30.

And I'm pretty sure Holmes and Watson is being delayed.

I don't see why the Grinch does 300m when the 2000 Grinch is still so popular. And the trailers have not been very good.

Despicable Me 3 only made 264. Illumination is not where it was in 2015-16. No one liked Minions, Pets or Sing, I don't think 300m worth of people will be fooled into seeing The Grinch, even though I'm sure it can muster a decent gross off the Dr. Seuss brand.

Well, they led to the decrease in gross for Despicable Me 3. I don't see why the Grinch grosses more than that.

Not to mention, the Grinch will open to like max 70m. Then it will drop 50% against Fantastic Beasts and another 50% against Ralph, another 50% post Thanksgiving. Its legs are going to be weak.

Minions is responsible for the decline in gross for Despicable Me 3, IMO.

First, where did you get that 70M max? Jim Carrey's Grinch adjusts to 95M OW, Pets opened above 100M, freaking Lorax opened to 70M 6 years ago.
Second, how in the world is it dropping 50% on Thanksgiving weekend? Megamind dropped 22% against Tangled, Trolls 39% against Moana, and neither of them had the Christmas theme to strengthen their legs.
Third, it's a Christmas movie with no animated competition in December, just explain why it's supposed to have bad legs.
Fourth, Pets and Sing being shitty has nothing to do with DM3 decreasing from the previous installement. The Minions franchise has just followed Shrek's domestic path: successful original, exploding sequel, threequel going very high on OW but getting weak legs because of the "low" quality, fourth installement dropping from #3 and grossing close to the original.

I was 2 years old when the first Grinch came out, but it really seems that there was so much excitement around that because it was the first full length Dr. Seuss theatrical live action film, based on the most popular Dr. Seuss book, and it starred Jim Carrey. No one wanted another Grinch film as far as I know. I've not heard one person tell me they wanted to see The Grinch. Pets had one of the best marketing campaigns ever. The Grinch I can't remember a single joke from the trailer, and its views haven't been very strong. You're right actually, I forgot that Wreck It Ralph opened on Thanksgiving weekend, so that will soften its drop.

I just think it's going to be bad and people will take their kids to Wreck-It Ralph, Beasts, Aquaman, Bumblebee or Mary Poppins instead.

Question regarding #4 and #5... Are we comparing Johnny English to the FIRST one? Or the 2011 one?
