Re: August 10-12 predictions
True but having an actor with bigger fanbase would have helped. Also look at the early reactions, almost all are talking about Statham Vs prehistoric shark.

Re: August 10-12 predictions
Anyway, it also stars box office poison, Ruby Rose. So its chances of breaking out are slim, so you're probably right about it not cracking twenty.

Re: August 10-12 predictions
I didnt realise BKKK was opening in so few theatres. I'll revise down my $17m OW to $15m as i still see it breaking out.
The Meg was meant to be made as far back as the mid 90s I recall and even then it had iffy prospects. I guess a $20-$25m would actually be very good for it (with overseas BO possibly saving it).

Re: August 10-12 predictions
Yeah, it was made for non-US box office anyway. You don't make a shark movie and cast Statham, Li Bingbing, and Ruby Rose if you want a US hit.

The Meg is the first to appear on Movietickets. A 20m debut seems likely.

Re: August 10-12 predictions
Isn't Meg the type of movie to have good online presence and be MT friendly? Plus it's Wednesday and not many movies are doing huge online ticketing business so cracking into MT is not that big of a deal at this point.

Re: August 10-12 predictions
The Meg is a monsters movie. It has visuals, thrills, and fun that will play broadly. Based on presales, $30m+ seems likely. Can it challenge Rampage's $36m OW?

The Meg taking a huge bite out of MT sales. Wonder if that means $35m?

I'll be surprised if it does anything more than $20m OW

Re: August 10-12 predictions
So Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again will cross $100m this weekend. It's doing really well. Better than I expected. The first will soon overtake its total but I am surprised it is still out in front! It was $4m ahead after Sunday now it' only $2m ahead. The first had great weekdays. Anyway, there must be a third film. I wonder what it could be called. Perhaps Mamma Mia! When All is Said and Done, or a more jokey title could be Mamma Mia! On and On and On. I'd actually prefer the latter.

Re: August 10-12 predictions
The difference this time would be bigger budget and an expected decline in OS/WW numbers. Domestically this is the best it could have done but I thought it will do close to $300m OS I don't see it getting there with current results.

Re: August 10-12 predictions
Pretty close Algren I'm happy that MI didn't drop hard like a 50% drop in face of a huge opener like the initial estimates suggested.
