Re: Thursday Previews (July 19)
Not surprised. The Equalizer is not a presale type movie is more of a walk-up movie. After seeing how many people bought tickets yesterday I knew it was going to do good. Both films should be between 30 and 35 million. I never bought Mamma Mia doing 40-plus let alone 50.

Re: Thursday Previews (July 19)
Solid for both. Mamma Mia 2 will probably miss $40m but there's a chance dependent on strong walk-ups by the older set.
EQ2 did well, though the 4pm start comes into play. Very well could open below its predecessor. I'm more interested in the WOM, which seems to be less divisive than critics overall so far.

Re: Thursday Previews (July 19)
Solid for MM2 and EQ2, but I'm not going to lie after seeing all those crazy theater reports yesterday for Mama Mia 2 I was expecting something closer to $5M. I'm not saying these are disappointing numbers, but it was definitely a bit over hyped IMO. Mid 30's seems like a good result for both.

Well, it being a sequel instantly puts a critics back up. It's probably a hell of a lot of fun, but critics don't like that word.

Re: Thursday Previews (July 19)
Mamma Mia 2 is headed to a mid-$30m opening.
Equalizer 2 is comparable to John Wick 2 in previews, good for a $30m+ OW. Denzel Washington is probably the most consistent draw in the US for these killer guy movies.

Skyscraper got creamed yesterday for some reason, down a whopping 19%.

I thought that was kind of weird, but it would explain why EQ2 would have such an effect.

The things that might help Skyscraper skew younger are The Rock and the visual effects (and of course the rating).
