Mamma Mia 2 probably wins the weekend...

Re: July 20-22 Predictions
Another tough weekend to predict. Three* sequels that nobody asked for, but whose primary audiences have been underserved all summer.
Mamma Mia - $28m Equalizer 2 - $27m Hotel - $25m
Should be very close with possibly different #1s on all 3 days.

Re: July 20-22 Predictions
Unfriended: Dark Web should bomb. Guess that makes 3 sequels opening?
Mamma Mia looks good for $30m+. Equalizer 2 is getting IMAX, so I think it will be fairly close between the two. It's possible nobody asked the EQ2 follow-up, but the first was well-received.

All I know is we still haven't sold a ticket to Equalizer 2 Thursday here yet and Mamma Mia's 7:00 was already almost sold out last Monday. I needed tickets for 5 and we had to get really shitty ones. I don't want to go to the 10:00 so I'm hoping they'll add another show closer to the 7:00 so I can just exchange them for better seats. They said they won't know if they'll add another show until they see how many prints they'll have of it. I'm assuming they'll get 2 prints so I should be good to get better seats at a different show. Even the 10:00 has a good amount of seats sold.

Lol Mamma MIA is not doubling the original. The first is not some beloved classic. Mike has extreme confirmation bias with that prediction. He just loves Mamma Mia so much he can’t see that no one cares.

Re: July 20-22 Predictions
Keep in mind, the MM1 adjusts to a $35 mil OW, and had a 5.2 multiplier. (Pitch Perfect went from a $15 mil OW to a $70 mil OW, with only a 4~ multiplier on the first)

You can say they have different audiences but The Dark Knight appealed to everyone and was an event. Had it not opened against that it could have opened higher.

Re: July 20-22 Predictions
The Dark Knight didn't appeal to older female moviegoers, which coincidentally Mamma Mia did.

Mamma Mia 2 - 38 The Equalizer 2 - 36
I can see both doing very solid numbers.

The Equalizer 2 - 37 million Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again - 34 Unfriended: Dark Web - 3
Dark Web seems destined to plummet from its predecessor. Even more than, say, Sinister 2 did. It is not a Universal release this time, and I swear the film came out of nowhere. I have not seen any advertising.

Mamma Mia is doing $50 m +. There's a huge audience for the film and the first was very well received.

Twitter activity is off the charts and it's true the first had great WOM/legs. $50m would place it as the solid #2 musical opening (only behind BATB), just not sure I can see that happening. EQ2 reviews are up and I'm a bit discouraged they aren't very good. Kind of surprised by that, not sure I'm interested now. Still seeing it doing $30m+ with no problem.

Re: July 20-22 Predictions
Yeah, the target audience for this are not opening weekend booster people. It could get a good total, but it won't be big out of the gate.

Re: July 20-22 Predictions
The Equalizer 2 will start previews at 4pm. Clearly they are expecting the older demographic as the primary demo. 4pm is ridiculously early.
