Barely increased on Saturday. Incredibles 2 also had a weak Saturday increase, think legs on this will be fine.

I guess this is Marvel's Prisoner of Azkaban moment. Where you can see exactly what the floor of the franchise is, no matter how good this entry is, it is the one where the diehards will show up but the mainstream mehstreams. Luckily July is dead dead dead, missing $200m would be embarrassing.

Do you know for sure it was featured as a double at some drive-ins, or are you making an assumption? Honestly, 17% doesn't seem like much. Seems more like natural MCU new release bump.

So it looks like that IW bump we were all hoping for didn't actually happen, although it's kind of hard to tell considering how frontloaded it was. Tracking had it in the $70-$80M range for a while, but I honestly thought my $80M prediction was somewhat conservative. I definitely didn't expect for it to go under $80M after that Friday gross which is probably why these numbers feel so underwhelming, but this is in no way shape or form a bomb or a disappointment IMO. It's still going to be quite profitable for Marvel/Disney in the long run, and if they decide to make another I wouldn't be surprised if that one increased even more after the character gets a sizable role in Avengers 4. They might also want to consider adding another big name hero to that third film like Spider-Man or Doctor Strange if they want to push the box-office even further.

Sorry To Bother You did amazing in 16 theaters this weekend. $717,302 for an average of $44,831. thompsoncory will be pleased ;). Next weekend it's going nationwide. Hoping it opens here.

Quote:
Sorry to Bother You reigned over the Specialty debuts Friday to Sunday with a brilliant start in 16 theaters. Filmmaker Boots Riley’s genre-bending title played seven markets in its opening weekend grossing $717,302 for the $44,831 per-theater average, the fourth highest of the year among Specialty releases. The figure is also notable given that the title bowed in 16 locations. Of the three indie titles to outpace Sorry to Bother You this year, only Searchlight’s Isle of Dogs played more theaters in its opening frame. That Wes Anderson-directed film grossed $1.62M in 27 locations when it opened in March, averaging $60,011.

Bleecker Street’s Disobedience bowed in five locations in late April, grossing $237,393 ($47,479 average) and IFC Films’ The Death of Stalin played four runs in its opening weekend in March, grossing $184,805 ($46,201 average).

“There is something special in this movie and we’re excited about it,” said Erik Lomis, Annapurna president, Distribution, Sunday morning. “Annapurna had been tracking this film for three years. We’re a champion of unique voices and we think Boots Riley is a refreshing voice in Hollywood.”
Annapurna said that the feature skewed 54% female and 51% caucasian, 49% non-caucasian with 42% of the audience falling between ages 25 and 34. Additionally, the company said 82% ticked the top two boxes.

“It did super strong everywhere,” said Lomis. “It did $110K at the Arclight Hollywood and $45K at Lincoln Square [in New York] where it was second to Ant Man. It was number one at the Angelika. It’s a unique film for the time. The cast and Boots were really engaged.” Lomis said that the feature played a mix of commercial and art house theaters over the weekend. Next weekend, Sorry to Bother You will head to between 600 and 800 theaters.

Disney is most likely going to re release Black Panther in 5 to 6 months for their Oscar campaign push. That is also when they're probably focus on getting across 700 billion mark. That way they can kill two birds with one stone.

That milestone is probably just out of reach. ;)

:funny:

Also, it’s just under $120,000 away from reaching the mark. Disney will probably fudge it so it gets across in the next weekend or two. There’s no need to wait for the Oscar re-release.

Ant-Man had about the sequel bump I expected. Almost right in between the Thor 1 to Thor 2 bump and the Thor 2 to Thor 3 bump.

I expected a much higher bump due to the reception of AIW.

I think that's a decent OW for Ant-Man and the Wasp.

It is the weakest of all the individual MCU franchises (outside of Hulk) but still a major success considering the Ant-Man films exist on the peripheral of the larger MCU films and that this is set before IW yet released afterwards. This will all obviously change after Avengers IV which should help the inevitable third film make more money.

Solid again for The Purge.

But he wasn't in AIW. I think that dampened the demand quite a bit.

It seems like The Catcher was a Spy benefited from Rudd's new release this weekend.

Soldado dropped 60%!!! I know it had Prequelurge to contend with but still.

Rampage is just $1m away from $100m now! And WB has The Meg out in 4 weeks, so it might be able to steal a couple of bills to push it over.

Black panther needs to get to $700m in its first rerelease. Ugh, it’s taking sooo long. This is Vanilla Sky all over again.

Greatest Showman. Hahaha. I’d love for it to stay in theaters until week 52. Also, 11 more weeks and it’ll match Titanic. Do it!

$210m is more than enough to justify a 3rd Ant Man film. You have a successful sub-franchise. Close it out with a trilogy. Guaranteed money. The biggest issue by then will be where to schedule it in among stablemates like Disney live-action, Disney animation, Pixar, Indy 5, Star Wars TBD, other MCU films, Fox Marvel, Avatar, and other Fox tentpoles.
