They should have went much smaller, built the "must-see" buzz, and eventually the mainstream would've liked it because the pressure to "like it" would have been so great that most would have folded under the arthouse pressure. But they went too wide, mainstreamers went to see it with no idea of what they were seeing, and there was no pressure from the film elite at that time so they vocalised their hatred of it.
