Disappointing OW even with the extra day

Marketing? Lucasfilm? Lord & Miller? Shitty SW fans?

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When fans speak, studios should listen. This is not the first time over-saturation (50%) of a franchise has resulted in less-than-stellar returns. And you cannot expect people to be fine with a new Han Solo, especially one that wasn't the people's choice (35%). Also the film is just quite bad (10%) and the marketing wasn't exciting (5%).

Seriously idiotic of Disney to remind people in 2015 that Ford is the true Han Solo, then in 2018 try to change it up and expect everyone to be fine with it. Basically, this film just shouldn't exist. Or if it must, they should have made it better with the right cast/director.

It should have never been made in the first place.

Kenobi: A Star Wars Story starring Ewan McGregor should have come out this December instead. They could have found a way to shoehorn Lando (the one part of Solo that has good buzz) and Chewbacca (didn't Obi Wan know him in the first film? they could have made up some kind of backstory), and Jabba the Hutt as well, into it, and maybe a Han Solo cameo via CGI regeneration ala Leia in Rogue One.

Too many Star Wars movies in a short amount of time. Marvel has been able to pull it off because they're more diverse with the settings, and it actually took them a while to get out multiple films with 100 million openings a year.

Last Jedi left a bad taste in some fans' mouth, and those who didn't? Probably not interested in this kind of project.

The production problems made fans wary, and possibly ended up a challenge to the marketing people.

Harrison Ford is the biggest star to come out of the franchise, maybe the biggest star to come out of any franchise. So big shoes to fill.

Any single one of these things may not have mattered, but all of them?

The "Memorial Day curse", or more accurately, it's hard to fit in so many blockbusters, especially targeted to the same crowd, in so many weeks without a pinch.

Episode 9 is having a nasty drop.

Too soon for an SW movie. Its not tried formula with SW movie. With MCU it's also introduction of new characters in an episodic/connected fashion that works. Maybe if they created a need for these side stories like Rey's back story or how the original trio split after Episode 6, the rise of empire people might have had more interest in these.

Disney normalizing the Star Wars brand via over-saturation (an odd shift from THE BLOCKBUSTER FRANCHISE to a blockbuster franchise); people dubious of another actor playing Han Solo.

Lots of things, but biggest of all...people just are not excited by Han Solo in large numbers, especially without Harrison Ford.

So happy this is completely unnecessary spinoff is blowing up in their face. We don't need a Star Wars every year, not even every 2 years. It's gotta feel special.

Plus, the logo for this movie looked fake and almost a parody of itself.

If Lord and Miller had stayed as directors and wildly changed the tone of the movie, would it have generated more buzz and ticket sales?

Tough to say. A weird Star Wars movie seems like it'd have a smaller audience. Wheres something like Guardians of the Galaxy does great as it looked completely new and not really connected to anything. People could just jump right into it and learn who these characters are without having to have seen previous stuff.

I'd say the only chance their film would have done better than the current Han Solo is if they could sell the characters better in the trailer.

Raunchy, ultraviolent R-rated Han Solo could have been fun. Maybe they could have dropped the 'A Star Wars Story' subtitle as well to mark it as clearly different. Think about it...we've never had a big budget sci-fi adventure that's also very R-Rated. Game of Thrones did it for the fantasy genre. There's an opening for sci-fi.

I blame Rian Johnson, Kathleen, the original directors of this and the kasdans and whoever decided on the Memorial Day release.

The Star Wars faithful are a loyal bunch of crazies (myself included) who have shown in the past with Rogue One they will see a totally unnecessary spin off with huge success. The fact that Solo won't even touch Rogue Ones numbers proves to me that Rian Johnson and TLJ totally alienated this group of fans. Ep 9 is in big, big trouble.

Abrams did the damage, in my opinion. The prequels took Warsies out of their comfort zone, and it was Abram's responsibility to build on that, but he went and made an imitation of the OT which got fans excited again, so Rian, Edwards and now Howard have had to take the flack to again lift Warsies out of their comfort zone because Abrams created a promise with TFA that future Star Wars films would be exactly what Warsies want, and that is basically for Star Wars films to be the same old rubbish forever. But he did make the highest-grossing film ever, so perhaps trying to make SW different and fresh just isn't what is wanted.

I keep telling people that TLJ will be the downfall of this franchise. Add to it the yearly installments and they have overplayed their hand. Going forward they need to scrap these side stories and go back to a 10 year trilogy release. Episode 9 is going down as well

It's more like the unnecessary side stories that look unappealing which will be the downfall of SW. I feel EP9 will do fine even with a slight decrease.

Star Wars brand has clearly taken a huge hit between now and when Rogue One came out. If Solo came out in December 2016 and Rogue One came out in May 2018, Rogue One would do terrible.

Take away the Star Wars aspect, and Solo has a lot of the elements of The Lone Ranger, John Carter, etc. Attempts at "light adventure" blockbusters with the handsome white male lead that's relatively unknown at the time. Seems like to get a Pirates or Guardians you really need to nail the humor and organic chemistry, otherwise you can feel the transparent attempt at that tone, and the irreverence backfires by making it seem like it'll be too emotionally slight

It's simple. Disney fucked up by not doing December. These same numbers would coast to 400+ in that period.

It says a lot to having a Han Solo film WITHOUT FUCKING HAN SOLO that this is still doing huge numbers.Disney really dropped the ball marketing this time out too (The reshoots took a lot of the marketing budget, I haven't seen a single spot on TV)

This won't hurt the brand in any way.. This movie doing 280-310 was my first prediction. It's falling right in line.

80-90m OW is gonna mean sub 250 total.
