Re: Early Friday Estimates
You say that, but action movies in August don't make money anymore.

Re: Early Friday Estimates
Didn't Guardians and SS disprove that?
August is a great month for blockbusters. Solo or DP2 would have 4 weeks to themselves.

Re: Early Friday Estimates
Other than Fast 6 in 2013 and The Hangover 2 in 2012, Memorial Weekend has just had disappointment after disappointment. This was the weekend for decades that started the summer season.
Not shocked at Solo. I'm a big SW fan and had very little interest in this one. Ford is so iconic as Han Solo.

Re: Early Friday Estimates
It's just a bad miscalculation. Solo should have been December to benefit from the holidays. It's too much of a throwaway film that its going to end up being quite non event.
I just hate that Summer now has barely started and the three big films are already done.Jurassic World is going to have a huge drop, All that there really is to be excited for now is MI6 (Ha, just realized the irony in that) and Ant Man might over perform.
Ocean's 8 and the Meg, I guess might be disastrous or do do well from the lack of competition.
Probably the worst Summer movie season in over a decade.

Well you and I might be excited for that. I doubt it will do 12 total.
Summer is Fucked. Surprises at this point is the only saving grace

Adjusted for inflation, it did $170m over the 3-day (since Thursday previews are now the norm and get counted into the weekend, I'm going to do the same with AWE) and $204m over the 4-day. Maybe Aladdin will break that next year? I was a member of another box office forum a long time ago. When At World's End was released, how foolish it was to see box office nerds criticizing its opening. How even more foolish they look now. There was nothing laughable about AWE's record. Memorial weekend is always a very precarious time for releasing a film. AWE's record is very impressive to this day. Pirates 2 opening with inflation and 3D is in the $230m range.
The Pirates franchise was a powerhouse. Even now while no longer a powerhouse domestically, the Pirates franchise is strong overseas. Dead Men Tell No Tales still made a nice profit for Disney due to the strong overseas performance. Many of the Pirates numbers remain impressive. Dead Man's Chest OW was incredible at the time. I was in the thick of it as I saw Dead Man's Chest twice on OW.

Re: Early Friday Estimates
The fact that Solo barely beat out a washed up Pirates from last year is damning. And yes $23-24m over 4-days is barely!

Re: Early Friday Estimates
Haha I don't think last year's Pirates comparison is good enough. That franchise has run its course and needs a reboot than a relaunch. The long gap of 6 years also didn't help there AND the biggest fact that Pirates is sure to do more WW.

It also did $17m or so Thursday previews which weren’t counted into the weekend back then. It was disappointing that it fell below Shrek and Spider-Man though. Another case of Disney puzzlingly pushing for a Memorial Day slot when a late summer date (July was Pirates month) would have been so much better.

But that's what I'm saying - its terrible that Solo could only beat the 5th film in a tired franchise by only $23m over 4 days!!
