Adrift is probably aiming to be the next Me Before You, but that was based on a much more popular book. Adrift is apparently based on a book, but it doesn't even have its own wikipedia page. I'm still thinking fans of The Fault in Our Stars can propel it to 10m opening weekend. |

Adrift is the only opener doing Thursday previews in my area. Action Point's TC estimate is only 2,000, far below Bad Grandpa's 3,000+. No showtimes are shown for Upgrade in my area. |

Adrift would gross more if she was set upon by sharks.  Maybe it can still capture a bit of the Shallows/47 Meters Down sleeper-hit magic. It feels more in sync with them in terms of scope and tone than The Meg.Action Point's arrival feels so muted, particularly relative to Bad Grandpa. Not doing much to mine Jackass nostalgia, unless I am just on the wrong wavelength. |

Upgrade will have previews tonight, as will Adrift. Action Point, on the other hand, will not have previews. Bad sign for it. |

A movie that incorporates jackass stunts into a fictional narrative seems solid on paper. But as many have pointed out, the time for it has passed. But nobody expected Bad Grandpa to open at $30m so maybe it can surprise. |

Is it in discount theatres yet? From its weekend holds, I cannot tell. It had just a 4% dip on the 27-29 April weekend, but that was due to Infinity War, I presume. If it still needs to open in discount cinemas, then that will easily get it over $700m. Its target demographic are all poor. |
