Solo: A Star Wars Story international box office
Rth from BoxofficeTheory Quote: You only be looking around 60m OS WE probably not much between Solo & DP2, DP2 could be #1 WE.. See when estimates come out
holy fucking shit!!!! sub 200m overseas might happen That would be under Paddington 2, Tomb Raider, Peter Rabbit, Maze Runner 3, Pacific Rim 2, and Fifty Shades Freed just to name some films from earlier this year.

This is more shocking than domestic to me. Star Wars has always been a major global brand, what is happening??

Its been a good brand in OS but I won't call it major brand though I'm probably more biased on this topic because emerging Asian markets don't have that love with this franchise.
Regardless $65m OS or less is just HORRIBLE for this.

Regardless $65m OS or less is just HORRIBLE for this. The OT all did massive numbers for the time. From the prequels, Phantom was #1 OS for the year, Sith was # 2. Force Awakens did over $1 billion and Jedi over $700m. It’s one of the biggest ever, but you are right that Asia doesn’t care.

Yeah it's really surprising that the well established markets are shunning this out. The brand has been huge because of these few key markets. I believe only Japan is left after this weekend.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story international box office
Huh? Star Wars has always been way more popular in the US than overseas. The last three have had pretty much a 50-50 split with overseas, and in this day-and-age that points toward SW being US-heavy. These days, blockbusters are always way more popular overseas. That's no excuse for Solo's performance. But still. Let's not make up our own history.

Algren wrote: Huh? Star Wars has always been way more popular in the US than overseas It's more complicated than that... SW has been almost as popular in "old" overseas markets as in the US... The old markets are all of Western Europe, Australia/NZ and Japan. It's the "new" markets like Latin/South America, Eastern Europe and Asia (excluding Japan) where SW is running into problems because folks there didn't grow up with SW and other (newer) brands are much, much more popular.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story international box office
btw, the old/new market rule also applies somewhat to James Bond...

Yes but in current WW trends you can't just count the "old" OS markets. The domestic/OS ratio is a BIG highlighter here. Its definitely US-heavy overall in this age of OS grosses.

I'm not asking to just count the old markets. I'm just at odds with the phrase Star Wars has always been way more popular in the US than overseas

Star Wars is iconic in Latin America. The prequels were big and very hyped and all the kids were into them. For some reason they new ones are falling behind though.

Its one market vs SO MANY and the results are sometimes that US grosses are slightly bigger. If its doing small scale numbers than there could be a case otherwise but its NOT and almost every entry in SW is record breaker in some or other form domestically.
