Has Marvel Dethroned Star Wars as the Box Office Champ?
Is Marvel more popular now than Star Wars at the Box Office?

Nope, until Marvel hibernates for 15+ years, comes back with an all new cast and a questionable quality trilogy's they are still KING

Yeah I'll go with no as well. It's just the current trend but MCU has been one of the most impressive and lucrative brands of this century.

Re: Has Marvel Dethroned Star Wars as the Box Office Champ?
TFA made more in 17 days -- $742 million -- than Infinity War will make in its entire run. With inflation that number turns into $794 million in 17 days. TFA's opening weekend was actually deflated by Christmas shopping in mid-December. It's insane the movie opened to almost $250m in that period. Probably would have opened close to $300m as a summer film.

I think Star Wars has hit its highest point already though. Marvel could keep getting bigger.

If you put Avengers in late December and Star Wars in May the numbers may look a lot different. I was firmly team SW until The Last Jedi. The tide may be turning. SW still has a deep mythology and universe that Marvel would have to do a lot of work to match but they are quickly getting there.

Darth Indiana Bond wrote: So the crown is safe in a galaxy far, far away Domestic yes. Overseas though, I think Marvel is becoming a bigger deal. It's definitely a bigger deal than Star Wars in China and that market is quickly turning into a bigger market than America...though you'd rather make huge totals in America with 60% of the money going to your studio than China where you only get 25% of the revenue.

Re: Has Marvel Dethroned Star Wars as the Box Office Champ?
If IW cracks $2B than I would definitely have to give it to Marvel as they are pretty much becoming a unstoppable force OS, but on the domestic front I still don't know. Even with the divisiveness of TLJ that still grossed $600M+. So far every Star Wars film has made over $1B WW even though we know that's going to change with Solo. Infinity War could very well out gross TLJ, but it won't come close to TFA and it's going to be a while before Marvel has another film cross $1B WW.

I agree MCU is turning out to be a better OS brand that SW.

Disney is definitely not counting in 1s and 20s.
Also, I wonder why they even bothered with that first shot in the trailer? The easily could’ve done it with Hulkbuster instead of the Hulk and it still would’ve been epic and in the movie.

I believe they wanted to show Hulk is in there as well to get some of Hulk fans excited plus it reminds of the first movie's team-up sort of running towards a goal instead of standing in a circle.

Batman is biggest solo character domestically. Star Wars is biggest brand domestically. Potter is biggest solo brand overseas. Furious is biggest brand overseas. Potter is biggest solo brand globally (US+international) Marvel is biggest brand globally (US+international).

Re: Has Marvel Dethroned Star Wars as the Box Office Champ?
Black Panther/Avengers remind me a lot of Thunderball and Goldfinger. Adjusted for inflation, those opened within a year of each other and would adjust to $686,664,000 and $608,634,000 respectably.
The only other "marquee" franchises not mentioned for grosses at this level would be Spielberg films and classic Disney. Those were heavily impacted by re-releases but even so as those were more common still have gargantuan lifetime grosses for a short time period.
Spielberg: E.T. $1,302,222,800 6/11/82 Jaws $1,175,763,500 6/20/75 Jurassic Park $841,088,300 6/11/93 Raiders of the Lost Ark $812,828,800 6/12/81 Close Encounters of the Third Kind $513,370,800 11/16/77 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom $491,431,300 5/23/84 Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade $453,643,400 5/24/89
Disney: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs $1,000,620,000 1937^ 101 Dalmatians $917,240,400 1961^ Fantasia $762,339,100 1941^ Mary Poppins $717,709,100 1964^ The Jungle Book $676,381,600 1967^ Sleeping Beauty $667,166,200 1959^ Pinocchio $618,762,600 1940^ Cinderella (1950) $553,567,100 1950^ Lady and the Tramp $511,646,200 1955^
Disney in particular has an uncanny ability to mass produce giant mega blockbusters, and has done so in cycles every 20-30 years since 1930s with a renaissance period. Saw in the late 30's/early 40's, again in the 60s, then late 80's/early 90's, then 10's.

There might still be an argument Spider-Man is a more popular character than Batman--Spidey's average is higher (And I made sure to not count his barely not DTV movies, in the interest of fairness).

So 2 600m movies in a year. That's something. Released just over 2 months apart. And both are Marvel.

Star Wars is still on top, but we've seen Star Wars fatigue before and we'll probably see it again.
