A Quiet Place held pretty well against tough competition with Truth or Dare. I wouldn't be surprised if it returned to #1 next weekend right before Avengers dominates for the next three weekends.

The quality horror film is the last hope for mid tier films it seems.

Comedies have to now be happy with a $50-$90m gross (in most cases).

Awesome for AQP. It might not have gotten the number one spot, but that is still a crazy good drop for it and it's a lock for $170M+. I agree with MadGez that after the success of films like Split, Get Out and now AQP quality horror definitely seems to have the most potential as far as mid tier breakouts go. Disappointing drops for Blockers and Ready Player One even though both will still be somewhat profitable at the end of the day. Great for Truth or Dare too and decent for Rampage even though I don't think it lived up anywhere near it's potential. Good thing the budget wasn't too high for it.

Pacific Rim: Uprising died this weekend. Might it not even hit $60m?

Blockers had no new competition for those looking for a comedy. A 50% drop is bizarre for it.

Truth or Dare will go down. They are predicting a way too friendly drop for it on Sunday. But regardless it did great. I mean when you have A Quiet Place doing as well as it did and it still makes high teens that's pretty impressive. Especially when it also looks like shit. :P Like the trailer usually gets laughs. Even in front of A Quiet Place which was an audience of horror/thriller fans. Definitely impressed with its opening even if it falls off a cliff from here.

For anyone who dared see it was the Hereditary trailer attached to Truth or Dare? I've had it with a lot of stuff here. Most recently A Quiet Place. I hope it gets a ton of play.

Surprised Truth or Dare was able to do 19m. Go Jason Blum.

It's concerning that a movie that is trashed among critics and audience alike did this well. Will only encourage Hollywood to produce more derivative garbage.

#Rampage came in above studio estimates with an opening wknd #boxoffice of $35.75M. Good daily flow with SAT up 20%, then SUN down only 26%. Will try to become 11th film for #DwayneJohnson in a lead role to break $100M domestic.

This is from Gitesh Pandya's twitter.

That's great for Rampage the WoM seems to be really good with that Sunday drop.

Great overall weekend. 5 movies above $10m, 7 movies above $5m, 10 movies above $3m and 16-17 movies above $1m mark.

$100m for AQP in 10 days. It should reach close to $150m mark before IW opens.

It's nice that Rampage recovered a bit with a good multiplier. I still think it's unlikely to hit 100M. It will have to have a great hold next weekend to have a shot, with Infinity War looming the following Thursday night. I figure it will be at 65-70M by the end of next weekend, and close to 75M when IW opens. But it will get destroyed at that point (losing all premium screens).

Yep. Rampage needed $40m+ OW to clear past $100m but you never know the spillover effect from Avengers might get it to a sub-60% drop over its third weekend which might be enough to push it past $100m mark and next weekend it could hold REALLY well given the weekend IM and supposedly good WoM.

I'm not saying that film's won't be affected by IW, but I do just want to highlight that films do still make money when BIG blockbusters are released. Not just because they're still in release and will get attendees as normal, but also because of spillover from sell outs. People need to some something, and if they're going for IW and cannot get in, their next best choose is probably Rampage.

There might be some spillover, and in that case Rampage and Ready Player One should benefit a bit. But I don't think there's a lot of spillover anymore with multiplexes just expanding hours and screens to accommodate demand.

Well, you work at a cinema so you know better than me. Even on a weekend where a film is likely to hit $250m, spillover doesn't happen much anymore?

Here's the weekend holds for TFA : http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/ch ... =51&p=.htm

JW : http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/ch ... =24&p=.htm

And TA:

Looks like spillover effects have gone minimal these past few years.
