A Quiet Place: Does the plot hurt or help?
A Quiet Place had been slaying with the marketing for a few months now. We had assumed it was a survival/isolationists horror movie about a family trying to live their lives around monsters who cannot see or smell. What are these monsters? We don’t know and shut up before they hear you.
Well the new trailer not only revealed that the monsters were actually aliens, but that A Quiet Place is actually a large scale sci-fi adventure that could have easily joined the Cloverfield universe.
So will this be good or bad for the box office? I think it hurts it. Sure the legs would have been shit if they hid the real plotline until the movie came out, but that opening would have been huge. A $40/85m run is obviously better than a $20/55m run. And that is where I think it lands now. How can you get excited about another alien invasion when Thanos is only three weeks away? A shame, this was my prediction for major breakout of the spring. Something told me to hold off on making a $100m club though and it turns out that something was right.

That really sucks. I wanted a horror film, not a sci-fi film. I'll still see it though.

A huge percentage of sci-if movies are functionally horror so short of seeing these new ads I don’t think this is a huge game changer. Getting strong reviews and the way the movies around it perform will be much more determinative.

The movie looks good in execution of its concept which was the MSP from the first point. I do think revealing the plot will hurt its chances a little bit but not to the extent that the audience will reject it.

lol what? It had one decent trailer. That is all. Far from a lesson in how to construct a movie marketing campaign.

Are you talking about this trailer? Because I just watched it and I don't think this means it's aliens at all.
If that's what you're going by I'm not convinced.

Even if it is aliens, it still registers as a horror movie more than, say, Independence Day.

Really excited about this after those reviews. This is what the movie needed to break out and I hope it does.

I see Don't Breathe-type numbers.

No way. It might be excellent but I don't see it catching on. I see more It Follows-type numbers. Though higher because star power raises its profile.

This is a totally different kind of release. It's a wide release horror film right off the bat. That was an indie film and never got the marketing push this has. Will be good for at least 3x that film's gross.

Yes, that's where I see it too ($42m). Still a far cry from $89m.

Oh I actually think it's doing more. That's just worst case scenario.
This should definitely breakout. Don't Breathe numbers shouldn't be that out of reach for it, but even something in the $50-$70M range should still be considered pretty solid for it.

This is also going to blow past Don't Breathe numbers. It Follows goes down over OD

I don’t think the aliens helped at all, but I’m glad it avoided #NotThanos. I’m really not even surprised by $50m, the trailers were so damn good.

The trailers couldn't have gone wrong. The whole concept is easy sell and the movie is so DAMN GOOD.
