Post All-Time Domestic Admissions (15m+)
This is an improved version of a list I had a few months ago at BOM. This one is more or less in tune with BOM's top 100 adjusted. Just a few notes: I'm 100% positive that the list is missing some releases from before 1950, but I'm not sure how to account for those, seeing how data for them is terribly scarce. Films after that are more or less in their right place (although all of this is based on estimates to begin with). Releases have been accounted for, for the most part (else Snow White would have billions of admissions, lol). Again, as a caution, take all of this with a grain of salt, since admissions figures are never, and I mean never, more than mere estimates. That being said, I think it's damn neat :D

There are 618 films on this list, meaning 618 movies have registered admissions above the 15m mark. I used the $6.14 avg. ticket estimate for the adjusted figures. Since tickets continue to go up, we will probably have in excess of 650 films above $100m in 2005. At this moment, there are 568.

2004 and 2003 Releases are in bold.

Fun and interesting list box.
Maybe you can do these lists by year or decade.

202 million for Gone with the Wind .. wow .. do people realize that at that, the population of America was NOT over 300 million like it is now ..

I dont know what the population was back then but I wouldnt be surprised that the amount of admissions exceeded the total american population of that time ...

Excellent work, Box, as always :)

318 . Silver Streak ( 1976 ) 23,980,781 ( $147,241,997 / $51,079,064 )

One of my all-time favorite movies. Richar Pryor and Gene Wider were great in this one. They starred in three more buddy movies together.

I saw this movie in 1978 in Galaxy theatre (App. 1100 Seats) in Bangalore, India. This was the first movie that was released after a trio of movies (The Towering Inferno 27 Weeks, Enter the Dragon 54 weeks and The Exorcist 26 weeks) running successively, had held on for over 2 years in this theatre starting in 1976.

353 . Minority Report ( 2002 ) 22,732,001 ( $139,574,486 / $132,072,926 )

People really missed out on this one and totally under appreciated this awesome movie.

This was accomplished over several re-releases. But I think a good chunk was stiil from the initial release. Still oustanding.

I wish that the re-releases were counted separately. This list is fantastic and very helpful, but the older movies that have been re-released a number of times over the years *cough* star wars *cough* are not that accurate.

Gone with the wind.

Yuk.

Everyone drools over this movie, including people that watch it now. I have watched it multiple times and just don't like it.

Without re-releases, it wouldn't be number one.

However, the film would definitely be high up there with the others solely based on its initial run. I'm 100% positive that the film was in theatres for years and years.

In the NYT review from 1939, it states that the film was anticipated like crazy; since back then films travelled from theatre to theatre, not everyone in the US saw it at the same time.

In the review, it mentions that 56m people intended to watch the film when it came to their town; that corresponds to over 1/3rd of the entire population of the US& Canada at that time. By comparison, a film today would need to pull in a guaranteed 107m to match that statistic. In other words, an assured $656m.

So, while it is true that re-releases pushed it to the top, we shouldn't be blind to the film's dominance during its initial run.
