It would be the first film released before May to take that crown in over 40 years - either since 1974 (when either Blazing Saddles or Towering Inferno were the #1 movie of the year - they're within $3 million of each other and don't specify how much of those were from re-releases for either movie), or 1972 (when The Godfather, a March release, was unquestionably #1). I know a lot of people are still thinking Infinity Wars takes the #1 slot for the year, but I'm getting deja vu of previous years where we were dead certain of something being #1 for the year, only to be proven wrong by some surprise (including The Avengers out-grossing Dark Knight Rises, and Jurassic World out-grossing Avengers 2....). |

Speaking of year-end domestic crowns, here's a breakdown of the number of movies to hold the crown released in which months, since 1975... December - 10 (including the last four years) May - 10 November - 8 June - 7 July - 7 All other movies - 0 |

Yeah, I don't think Infinity War opens much bigger than Black Panther, and its legs should be less than a 2.5X multiple, while Black Panther's should be bigger. It will be close, but I give the edge to Black Panther. |

As crazy as it is to imagine this definitely has a chance of happening. Both might be very close in the end, but I do expect Black Panther to have the better legs of the two. |

There is a certain possibility but I feel that IW will do even bigger than BP over OW which would be enough for it to get #1. |

Yep that's true but as I mentioned else where movies attracting black crowd tend to be frontloaded which could be the deciding factor here |

Yeah looking more as more likely for BP to cross $600m now which isn't a sure thing for IW. |

Yep, $600M+ is looking really good for BP right now and that is far from a lock for IW. Still nothing wrong with being the number 2 film of the year, especially if your Disney/Marvel. |

Now it will give every film for the rest of the year something to aim at. If IW doesn't do it, the chances of another film doing it are slim. |

With DP's legs, BP gets to $578m and that would in itself will be a mighty challenge to overtake for IW. |

Tracking from Variety: Black Panther” could take in as much as $100 million during the upcoming Feb. 23-25 weekend and it’s likely to lead during the March 2-4 frame, when Jennifer Lawrence’s “Red Sparrow” is pegged to open in the $18 million-$25 million range for Fox, while MGM’s “Death Wish” should come in with $15 million-$20 million. Initial tracking released this week for “A Wrinkle in Time” shows a range of $34 million-$37 million — hardly a blockbuster number at the moment, though those figures can shift significantly by the time the film opens. But that may be enough to beat “Black Panther,” which will eventually have to start slowing down its record-breaking pace. Would expect WIT to go over $40m and maybe $50m. Hopefully Sparrow can go above $25m and DW over $20m. |

I would not rule anything out with IW, but BP did well enough even if it ends the year as #2. |

^ I agree but even with $250m OW for IW I see it doing $700m total MAX which is also currently the max for BP. I believe it could get close to the actuals in the end. |
