Post Re: Black Panther $1B Worldwide Club
I wonder if stars like Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jamie Foxx are a little envious and bitter about Black Panther's success. I bet they always imagined that when a big, industry-changing black-themed movie came along, they would be the ones carrying it (or at least part of its fabric). So I just wonder if inside them somewhere there are thoughts like this. I am sure for the most part they are over the moon by its success. But I think especially Will Smith as he's the youngest and has had legit blockbuster power before...I think he might be a little peeved for not being part of the most successful black film ever made.

Meh i dont think smith is peeved about it. He's had multiple blockbuster hits and a great career. Denzel never seemed like the type to chase after blockbuster films, he always goes for dramas and sometimes action. I think guys like Wesley Snipes on the other hand might be bitter, he tried to break out and was given a few commercial opportunities but he never caught on with the public.

But that's why I didn't mention people like Snipes. He is too much of a has-been. He MUST be over his bitterness by now. But Smith and Foxx are still in the public eye, and yet they are nothing to do with the biggest black film ever made. L. Jackson also, because of how associated he is with the MCU ... yet he's nowhere to be found. Not even a credits scene. Snipes has seen hundreds of black-themed films pass him by, but up until now the big black-themed films were being made by the likes of Smith, Foxx, Washington, etc., which is why I think their feelings of pride may also be shared with feelings of bitterness. This feeling of being on the sidelines is new to them.

Will Smith is not bitter at all if anything he's smiling ear to ear as he is part of the reason this was made possible. Before him there were no bonafide black action superstars who could get studios to invest huge budgets for a lead black actor.

He was also apart of one of the most popular TV Sitcoms of all time with a large black cast that brought a ton of relevant "Black" issues to primetime TV. "The Fresh Prince" was his Black Panther moment to show the world that successful black families don't have to look and avoid some issues like the Cosby show did.

Lastly Smith broke ground by being the first Rap group to receive a Grammy, but he chose to not accept it because the network would not show the award on TV.

Here's his response to the success-

Denzel paid for Chadwick Bosman's college

Sam Jackson is sarcastically upset- (Apparently he is also not in Infinity war either)

Quote:
Yeah, I’d love to do a Nick Fury movie. I’m always open and game. But they got Infinity Wars, two movies to do there, and after that there’s Brie [Larson’s] movie Captain Marvel, which maybe [Nick] will be part of. Also, I asked them, “So you’re doing Black Panther and the only black character in the Marvel Universe is not showing up?” And they’re like, “Nick Fury is not in Wakanda!” How can he not know the other black superhero on the planet? How the hell does that work? But they just said, “No you’re not in that one.”

Jamie Foxx is attached to star in another Black Panther Party bio movie "Signal Hill" (He's jokingly mentioned that he's "Not dating White Girls Until March 1"

Quote:
In “Signal Hill,” Foxx will play Elmer “Geronimo” Pratt, the former Black Panther party leader and Vietnam vet whom Cochran represented in helping to overturn a murder conviction that sent Pratt to prison for 27 years for a crime he said he didn’t commit. Cochran helped Pratt to settle a false imprisonment suit for $4.5 million in 1992.

So by next Saturday BP reaches $1b mark. The US (over)performance is easily getting it past the mark.

Intl Monday was 7m!, getting closer. Also does anyone know why we don't have any expanded African numbers outside of South Africa? I'm sure this is playing big in Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Ghana, ect.

Rev I think it's going to be the top MCU film- The Avengers is at $1,519,479,547

Yeah this pretty much looking to become the top MCU movie. Though I do believe that IW can top this mark specially with the OS audience expansion

It is playing in Kenya and Nigeria. Not sure about Ghana. I would imagine so. It must be playing in Egypt too, but not sure why it must be "playing big" there. Egyptians are not black-black like in the film. They're basically sand dwellers.

Weird that Box Office Mojo used to report numbers for Nigeria but now nothing. I used to enjoy checking those out.

These OS reports are getting frequent but less detailed nowadays.

Probably headed to 520M OS-China. Let's add 680M Dom. 1.2B WW - China.
It has to make more than 300M in China to get to the Avengers. So yeah, this is NOT looking to become the top MCU movie, and very likely won't beat Ultron either. But since PS are strong in China, Iron Man 3 will be passed.

The grosses are starting to die down now, and it hasn't even reached $1b yet. So of course it won't become the highest-grossing MCU movie. The Avengers sits at $1.5b. Won't beat Ultron either. And Infinity War will probably make $1.7b, so it will sit at #4 or #5 by the end of the year. Not half bad, so don't ruin it by expecting too much and having it fail to meet those wacky expectations.

Algren how much do you think it will make in China? I gave it $200m in China (which I now recall was a mistake) and $700m domestic with another $150m from OS - China (From a $56m weekend with Russia and Japan just starting their runs).

Revised numbers: additional $200m domestic + $100m China + $150m OS-China from $910m current total giving it $1.35b total. Think it will settle for $1.3b in the end.

I took Rev's calculations into consideration by mistake, won't happen again :P

I'd say $90-$110m in China, based on what other MCU films have done. Personally, I don't think it will hit $80m.

Presales are stronger than DS and Thor 3, and on par with Homecoming. Plus, they're picking up fast, which is always a good sign. Thinking sub-80M now is just stubborness.

Yeah I think the US over-performance will help BP in China. Not in terms of Chinese caring about US but in terms of the movie being big, coming from an established and known brand MCU, generally good reviews and then the first black solo superhero movie in the universe. There would be a general curiosity to see what's the fuss about it.
