Maybe with a more competitive date it would miss out but I think anchoring its own weekend in January and being one of the only big releases of the month certainly helps. Plus there aren't many movies for teens right now. Only Jumanji which most have seen already and Insidious, which is mostly old news. There's also Greatest Showman which is appealing to everyone but it too has been out a while. Time for something new to excite this demo. Yes on paper it should cross but the market is quite dense for January, almost all movies are currently seeing good runs. Also I just feel the marketing is unusually muted on this and that time for this series has already passed. I wouldn't be surprised by $20m but I think there is good chance it opens close to that mark with $18m-$19m. Yeah looks like sub $20m is likely.

Re: January 26-28 Predictions
I cannot wait to see Paddington 2's theatre drop this week. Surely it will be huge.

Re: January 26-28 Predictions
Paddington 2's second weekend drop was better than the first movie which dropped 415 theaters in its third weekend. Ofcourse the weekend gross is lesser so it will drop more theaters but its average isn't too poor for many theaters to abandon it. I think a decent 800 theaters drop in this situation or maybe even lower.

Re: January 26-28 Predictions
I am thinking also that Oscar nominated films may expand a bit this weekend. And Paddington 2 is in 3,700 cinemas. For a film that is only looking to make, what, $6m this weekend, that's just way too many. I cannot see any way it stays over 2,500.

Re: January 26-28 Predictions
Well it should see a cut in showtimes I believe but its theater count will still be healthy. Here they generally prefer to finish the showtimes for kids movies in the morning-evening slots where as the Oscar type adult oriented movies gets the night shows.

Re: January 26-28 Predictions
I think that's true of everywhere. And Paddington 2 has been out in China for ages but still maintains that 1 showtime a day at my local cinema. So you may be right. Let's see.

Re: January 26-28 Predictions
Eh I still think Paddington will be in around 2,900 theaters or so. It's going to be one of the top grossing movies out right now over the weekend.

Hostiles tracking is at $10m but I don't see it happening. I don't know many who are even aware it's coming out - or what it is, despite Bale.

Re: January 26-28 Predictions
Nobody wants Proud Mary, though. That is losing over 1,100 theatres.

Proud Mary dropped 65% and there are no signs of it stabilizing.

One of the downsides of cutting the cord, I suppose. Haven't seen a commercial in ages. Surprisingly, Hostiles is #3 on MT with nearly 7%.

Paddington 2's 3-day estimate = $5.7m
That's just criminal.

Re: January 26-28 Predictions
I think that's a great hold for Paddington 2, its holding better than the first movie (which already had some amazing holds) and given the muted opening and theater loss this weekend this was expected. It has one more holiday coming shortly which would mean it could easily see another $5m (4-day) weekend. I think the chances of $60m are becoming a reality. That would be a GREAT total given the opening. And can we talk about TGS. OMG

That's just criminal. I'm surprised it lost so many theaters this weekend. It could have dropped less than 25%.
