100% RT but it still opened with $2.4M yesterday in 3700+ theaters.

Any opinions on this one?

Who was asking for it? The British? I've read the first one was good but I have no desire to see this talking bear.

It isn't eligible for Oscars 2018 and thus doesn't receive the same kind of campaign other movies have, that's what went wrong, lacking the 'internal force'.

Market was wide open for heartwarming kids fare. I'm totally bewildered.

I remember seeing the trailer in front of Jumanji and wonder and both times it bomb with the audience. This is not really that shocking. Maybe a great movie but it looks to preschool ish

Paddington 2 is my favorite movie of 2017.

As I mentioned in my review, though marketed as a kids movie, Paddington 2 is so slyly wise that only an adult audience will ever fully appreciate its wisdom and humor. It is also the darkest and I daresay most frightening Paddington film you'll ever see. Paddington 2 is a tough film to market and I predict it won't fully be appreciated for a decade or more as the modern classic it is.

You know, I was going to come in here and say that if no one saw the first, why would anyone see the second? Then I saw that the original made $76 million in North America.

I have no idea. I guess Jumanji and to a lesser extent The Greatest Showman and Star Wars might've eaten into it's audience. Hopefully, more and more people will go over the weekend and holiday.

Family film sequels starring animals usually decrease. I'm not sure why, maybe the kids move on quickly?

Garfield: A Tail of Two Kittens, 102 Dalmatians, Stuart Little 2 and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed all had big drops from their first installments.

At least Paddington 2 is doing well internationally so they might make a third one to cater to the UK audience.

The first was kind of forgettable, IMO. I was certainly in no rush to see this.

I guess The Greatest Showman and Jumanji are filling the market for feel good family friendly comedies.

Unfortunate for you. The first was wonderful and I'm looking forward to checking out the second.

Unfortunate indeed!

My condolences to nghtvsn that his close-mindedness prevents him from experiencing these fine films. :(

The two Paddington movies are both rare examples of absolutely perfect films. Although they are both nominally children's movies, they are entirely enjoyable by adults. They stand at the very pinnacle of modern filmmaking.

The first was my choice for best movie of 2014 and the sequel is my best movie of 2017.

Definitely think Jumanji competition was a big one. It's heading towards $400 m at this rate.

However, I think one argument that hasn't been brought up yet was that it was a Weinstein Company movie originally. WB only took it on in mid November so switching between studios probably and the turmoil at its original studio and little room for WB to give it a big push between SW and Jumanji probably didn't help matters. There was no studio that could move full steam on a good marketing campaign on this despite glowing reviews.

And release data probably should have been pushed back so WB could give it a better push.

Neither was the first one when it was released in the same spot.

I do think its the nature of the movie that suits more UK audience and not American. I do believe everyone who saw the first liked it though didn't love it. Hopefully Paddington 2 will find audience again like the first and have a healthy run.

Reminds me of the Nanny McPhee films and their stateside performances.

With Paddington, I believe there is a certain unfortunate dynamic where the elements critics love (the almost Wes Anderson-esque twee eccentricity, the air of calm and class and wit) are alienating to audiences or at least American audiences, who find it odd or believe it is just for the smallest of children.

The more aggressive and brash Peter Rabbit will earn far, far more...and then generate its own under-performing sequel.

Yep pretty good comparison Peter Rabbit will do better than this in the same season, I also think that it will be a much inferior movie but it will connect with American audience. Ironically Corden is the lead for that movie.

CinemaScore A for both Paddington 1 & 2.

Since parents were buying the tickets, i have to blame the Harvey Weinstein effect.

Rolling Thunder is an odd dude at times. ;) Often he seems quite the astute box-office observer...but then he'll suggest an idea in the vein of, "There are people who didn't buy a ticket to Paddington 2 because Harvey Weinstein was previously the American distributor." Eh? The only potential post-Weinstein impact was Warner Bros. having less time for promotion.

Yep. I think it was more in terms of promotion of the movie. Its actually recovering well and hopefully with good WoM will find audience. Hoping for another miraculous TGS-light run for it ;)

Just dusted off some ancient MTC data. It's not just that kid sequels tend to do worse than originals, but even tracking itself habitually overestimates kid sequels. Parents must be really averse in general to taking their kids to sequels, even though they themselves aren't necessarily averse to them. Since tracking doesn't reach kids, it must be that tracking for these sequels is really tracking more those without kids who want to see the films.

I remember a coworker mom telling me years ago that they didn't do sequels. I thought that was interesting. No modifiers with that - just no sequels. Regardless of how good the first one was, there must be a certain contingent that just won't even consider a sequel. Piling that on top of Jumanji's success makes for a rough go of it.
