A few notes; I don’t think we need the big budget and non big budget qualifiers. Also would like to see some type of Most Bankable Star Left category.

Such a selfish thread. Why not actually use your third ownership in the site and host a box office awards for all to participate in?

Hosting a box office awards for the site, and making a thread for your own awards but also saying "oh, you can all post yours too, if you want" are two completely different things, Rev.

I had assumed it was a new major awards show until his second post. I’m fine with either though. You do you Magnus.
Is this also the time to ask if Doc will be coming back for movie awards or are we still not talking about it?

Re: 2017 Year in Review Awards
This idea is great. Magnus is the best, Algren is trash that should’ve been thrown out years ago, and people are damn well capable of making their own lists. Anyone could kick this off to influence opinions, and, y’know, have a conversation.
On that note I’m calling Wonder Woman as best big budget legs.
Get Out would probably win best overall performance and best non big budget over performance if it wasn’t for It. I actually think that might be the most overlooked film in terms of over performance. That said I think Get Out’s 5.27 multiplier makes it a shoo in for most impressive legs.
Vin Diesel wins Best Overseas performance for xXx3 and F8te of the Furious as a unit.
Either Justice League or Blade Runner 2049 is my most dissapointing... the writing was on the wall for Justice League, but only 93 million opening weekend is horrid for what was supposed to be DC’s Avengers. Hard to think that underperformance won’t be one of the most impactful. This year really showed that people love superhero movies when they can find ways to be novel. Considering how well every other superhero movie did, this surely must be causing some major soul searching for the studio.

Re: Magnus’ Box Office Awards 2017
-Best Overall Performance
Definitely It
-Best Domestic Over-Performance (Big Budget)
Wonder Woman, in a year that had only maybe two or three big budget overperformers.
-Best Domestic Over-Performance (Non Big Budget)
I mean, I guess It by virtue that its budget is so small, but Get Out[/biwas even smaller, and had an even more profitable budget-to-profit ratio.
-Best Overseas Performance: [i]Wolf Warrior 2was a huge performance from a non-Western movie. There's also the Vin Disel double feature. And Dog's Purpose outgrossed Rogue One in China, right? But I'm kind of impressed by Happy Death Day exceeding its domestic total,
-Most Disappointing Performance (Big Budget)
Justice League is the biggest underperformer, but there's a schadenfreude there. War of the Planet of the Apes disappointed in a "This makes me personally sad" way.
-Most Disappointing Performance (Non Big Budget)
I do think Girls Trip could have done better. But I'm giving it to Captain Underpants Way to not take advantage of the dearth of kid pics.
-Most Overlooked Positive Performance
Probably Skull Island. Not that it was groundbreaking, but to put in perspective, it made more than twice The Mummy with less starpower or fanfare.
-Most Overlooked Negative Performance (I.e. a film that did bad but no one talked enough about how bad it was)
This is a tough one, because a lot of flops become punching bags, but I'm going to go with The Mountain Between Us, as its quietly ignominious floppage was quite the juxtaposition to the internet loudly wondering why Idris Elba wasn't somehow recognized by People Magazine for his undeniable appeal.
-Most Impressive Domestic Opening (Big Budget)
Beauty and the Beast.
-Most Impressive Domestic Opening (Non Big Budget)
Get It Out of Here.
-Most Impressive Legs (Big Budget)
Wonder Womant (obligatory objectification of Gal Gadot's legs)
-Most Impressive Legs (Non Big Budget)
You know what, I'm going to say Annabelle Origins or whatever it was to mix it up.
-Most Impactful Performance (i.e. a performance that will change the industry going forward)
Positive? Get Out, though I also think Justice League will send out some ripples.

Re: Magnus’ Box Office Awards 2017
-Best Overall Performance Wolf Warriors 2 - easily. This set a new total gross record in China by over $320m, and its legs were unheard of for the market. Its performance in China alone made it onto the WORLDWIDE gross list in at #8, beating what Wonder Woman made in every market. Add other markets and its rank goes up to #6, out-grossing Guardians Vol. 2.
-Best Domestic Over-Performance (Big Budget) Wonder Woman
-Best Domestic Over-Performance (Non Big Budget) Get Out
-Best Overseas Performance Fate of the Furious - only movie in 2017 to make a billion overseas
-Most Disappointing Performance (Big Budget) The Great Wall - it cost $150m and made just $45m.
-Most Disappointing Performance (Non Big Budget) mother! - wide release, JLaw, well-regarded director, big marketing campaign .. just $17m domestic, and $44m worldwide. Budget: $30m.
-Most Overlooked Positive Performance Leap! - a 4.6 multiplier at the very end of the summer.
-Most Overlooked Negative Performance Alien: Covenant
-Most Impressive Domestic Opening (Big Budget) The Last Jedi
-Most Impressive Domestic Opening (Non Big Budget) Baahubali 2: The Conclusion - It made $10m from just 425 cinemas.
-Most Impressive Legs (Big Budget) Wonder Woman
-Most Impressive Legs (Non Big Budget) Get Out
-Most Impactful Performance Get Out

Re: Magnus’ Box Office Awards 2017
-Best Overall Performance Get Out (an original horror film grossing $175.48m with a budget of just $4.5m and a multiplier of 5.26 is mind-blowing)
-Best Domestic Over-Performance (Big Budget) Wonder Woman (a superhero film $400M+ and close to a 4 multiplier is outstanding)
-Best Domestic Over-Performance (Non Big Budget) Get Out
-Best Overseas Performance The Fate of the Furious - Earned $1,000,000,000+ OS (even with the unfortunate death of Paul Walker) is still fantastic and lost only 13% of its OS audience.
-Most Disappointing Performance (Big Budget) Justice League (after coming off of the success of Wonder Woman, it should not have opened under $100M)
-Most Disappointing Performance (Non Big Budget) The Lego Ninjago Movie (It was the first kids film since The Emoji Movie. It came off of the critically acclaimed Lego Movie and Lego Batman Movie. It should not have opened just better than Storks)
-Most Overlooked Positive Performance Baby Driver (Despite critics loved the film, it came from the director of Edgar Wright who had not produced a profitable hit in 10 years. WOM audiences matched critics and it conquered tough competition in the summer with $107.8M domestically and $226.9m worldwide against just a $64M budget (approximately $34M budget and $30M to market and advertise)).
-Most Overlooked Negative Performance (I.e. a film that did bad but no one talked enough about how bad it was) This was a tough one but I chose Just Getting Started (Its reviews were terrible despite the starpower of Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones. Plus, it came from the director of Bull Durham, White Men Can't Jump and Tin Cup. Even though the director had not had hits since then, this was an opportunity for him to make a comeback. It did not happen though. It flopped so hard despite its advantages, its worldwide gross won't even gross half of its $22m budget despite the holiday boost.)
-Most Impressive Domestic Opening (Big Budget) Beauty and the Beast (it had to deal with Logan and Kong Skull Island (though not targeting same audiences) with openings of $60M+ openings back-to-back. Plus, it broke the March record for OW).
-Most Impressive Domestic Opening (Non Big Budget) It (Broke the September Record. No other horror film (let alone a September film) opened above $100M until this came out)
-Most Impressive Legs (Big Budget) Wonder Woman
-Most Impressive Legs (Non Big Budget) Get Out
-Most Impactful Performance (i.e. a performance that will change the industry going forward) Get Out

Re: Magnus’ Box Office Awards 2017
The 2017 Maggies:
Best Opening Weekend - It Runner up: Beauty and the Beast
It is the obvious answer here. It crashed through the glass ceiling created by its genre, doubling the next highest horror opening. Maybe its an anomoly , but I believe it just the start of the Horror Blockbuster. And while many around here were predicting monster numbers for Beast, I am still stunned by them. It managed to rally the Potterverse even better than Fantastic Beasts.
Best legs - Get Out Runner up: Wonder Woman
If this award were literal, Gal Gadot would win by a mile. Wonder Woman should have been a $150m / $400m performer though, which is still great but not as unheard of as its x4 multiplier. So I will give this one to Get Out, which became a cultural sensation, bucking genre trends much like It. It also had to deal with $40m+ openers in its next five weekends!
Worst opening - Justice League Runner up: Blade Runner 2049
JL is still an embarassment to all involved. There were alot of good choices for #2, but alot of them fell victim to Tired Franchise Syndrome. Blade Runner seemingly had the perfect balance of new and old and I was expecting an opening nearly double what it got.
Most Bankable Star Left - The Rock Runner up: Robert Downey Jr.
Not a great year for the stars. Scarlett plumetted out of her A+-list status and even our winner had a flop. But even that $58m Baywatch looks decent next to the $18m of Chips. Where are you Leo???
Worst overall performance - Justice League Runner up: The Dark Tower
JL goes without saying, once again. The Dark Tower was just a huge waste of a potentially great franchise.
Best overall performance - It Runner up: Get Out
Get Out was the talk of the town for a whole month, buttt we see small movies overperform in the $150-200m range all the time. Hidden Figures did it just a few months earlier. We have never seen a horror open to $100m (or even $61m). And while it was advertised as an adventure film, the product itself was horror to the bone. So seeing it drop only 50% was almost as impressive as the opening. And as said before, this opens to the door for more horror blockbusters. How high can the already highly anticipated A Quiet Place go? Last year I’d say its breakout limit was $25/60m. Now? Who the fuck knows? It revitilized the box office in its most desperate hour and proved that you can gain mass success outside of the Disney bubble.
