The sequel to Star Wars Breaks All The Records, and as is tradition for the series, the sequel will be much darker.

Force Awakens was my all time most anticipated movie by a mile. Star Wars’ return to glory was something everyone and their mama needed to a part of. Last Jedi opens in four days and I’m barely excited, despite knowing that I will probably love the movie. It feels like a Pixar sequel in that way.

The last minute advertising is also heavily focusing on the potential Rey heel turn. But is that really what the people want? Yet that is what Disney is trying to sell. The nudge that makes people go from “I’ll see it eventually” to “I have to see this now!” Force Awakens already had mountains of hype, but it still killed it late too. Showing Finn with a lightsaber had everyone even more hyped. Is he a Jedi? I have to know!

So it is with a heavy heart that I predict -

$40/53/55/46m for a $194m weekend and just barely above $700m total. Still a great performance that only Star Wars is capable of, but there will be no “Mother Of God” memes this time around.

Agree. Excitement is more back to earth this time around.

Very interesting club. I'm predicting an OW well under TFA, but sub $200M would be really surprising and disappointing IMO. I just don't see it going that low even if the hype feels closer to RO than TFA. It's true that they haven't been able to quite replicate the buzz that movie created, but it was always going to be a hard task doing so and I have feeling TLJ could make up a significant amount of loss ground in walk-ups once reviews are out.

Jedi isn't going below $200m. I see a scenario where the early Friday projections are well off the pace of TFA but increase throughout the night.

There's still a hundred seats empty for the Thursday first preview at my local IMAX.

For TFA, it was completely sold out three weeks ahead of time.

While it didn't open to it, Mockingjay Part II also had 4,175 cinemas in December, so it's not really a huge feat that it opens to 4,175. I mean, it is a fucking Star Wars film. It's not like it would be difficult to convince cinemas to take it.
