Yeah, definitely didn't expect that. Ridiculously frontloaded and will assuredly fall apart from here.

Re: Friday Estimate (spoiler: October 2017 is fucked)
To be fair, Blade Runner adjusts to $83.4 million in 2017 dollars. Sounds like its fans didn't expand much beyond that as many thought it had. It's a weird and kind of boring (at least in my opinion) sci-fi detective story from the 80's. It's quite impressive the studio thought to invest $150+ million in its sequel.

Woof! This is almost deserving of a WWW. So its really only late 80s, early 90s nostalgia that sells right now.

should have put a cape on Ryan Gosling on the poster. Since funny book movies have the advantage over everything else

Re: Friday Estimate (spoiler: October 2017 is fucked)
Yikes, that's a huge downgrade over the initial early Friday number.
Yeah this is not looking good at all. All hopes now rest entirely on overseas totals, and the very slight chance this becomes a cult classic many years down the road.

Re: Friday Estimate (spoiler: October 2017 is fucked)
Just awful for Blade Runner 2049. I know the original is considered a cult film, but can't you say the same about the original Tron or The Mad Max films? I honestly think it just didn't connect with the mainstream which makes sense considering how niche hard sci-fi can be, but I thought the marketing was effective enough.
You also had Gosling and Villeneuve coming off some big hits and Ford's name doesn't hurt either, but I guess all of that just wasn't enough to push it towards blockbuster status. Going by the audience reports younger audiences didn't give a shit a all and even really older skewing films like Gravity, The Martian and Interstellar had some appeal towards that crowd. The R-rating and the nearly 3 hour running time are probably major factors too.

I wonder if it would have done better as a remake. Maybe watching the first Blade Runner was too much to ask of people.

Re: Friday Estimate (spoiler: October 2017 is fucked)
2049 faced a lot more hurdles, but it's pretty depressing to think it's looking to do less than half of Tron: Legacy domestically.

It wouldn't be Bladerunner if it didn't flop.

Re: Friday Estimate (spoiler: October 2017 is fucked)
Before this week this was what I was expecting to happen but I thought with hype and reviews 45m+ was happening.
I'd be very surprised if the film holds well. I feel like you need to see the first one to appreciate this one.

Re: Friday Estimate (spoiler: October 2017 is fucked)
86% of the audience was over 25. Doesn't help we have adult appealing films for the rest of the month (Foreigner, Snowman, Suburbicon)
This will probably help Thor immensely being the first film to appeal to a younger audience as well.

Re: Friday Estimate (spoiler: October 2017 is fucked)
I'm not sure that is much of an accomplishment. It's along the lines of Friday night will be dark. Even people who love the film won't be pleased.

It's doing very well for an unnecessary sequel to a box office bomb.

Re: Friday Estimate (spoiler: October 2017 is fucked)
Ha. This is justice. The film is quite long, which will impact showtimes, but still, $12.7m is terrible. It's screwed now. All it had in its armoury was to open large. The bad WOM is inevitable.

DV is not a big box office director, heads should roll for that choice since a Blade Runner reboot was a brand name that could have been turned into a high grossing franchise
