It seems to have a lot of things going for it, although a Silence run time could work against it for the masses.

$+150m seems not completely a stretch to hit, but surely it would be considered a huge success if it did.

It seems to be the right over/under number.

I say it makes it though, why I quietly hope it gets closer to $200m even.

Hmm if this opens to $50-$55M I can see it getting there. I don't think general audiences will love it, because it won't be exactly what their expecting, but as long as it doesn't get Watchmen type reactions it should still be okay.

This is the MUST-SEE film of October and if WOM is at least on par with something like The Revenant than I see no reason why it can't get to $150M+, especially with a bigger opening than Fury Road.

I'm IN.

If they had made an enjoyable film, it would have made it no sweat. But they made a long-ass boring copy of the original bore-fest.

Yep this had the potential to do Gravity and The Martian numbers but the movie was just not enjoyable enough.

That's not it. It had the potential, but it truly went for the Bladerunner route, so it did pretty well. Basically they went the same way that they thought Godfather 3 would be huge as a result of what happened before. And its a better then average film.

That's not it. The audience break down begs to differ.

What was the breakdown?

They went for the non mainstream marketing, and they did well enough.

Sparrow is pissed that you dismissed his viewpoint ("that's not it"). :giggle:

Hehe true I didn't like it but I wasn't pissed and went for a dramatic return :P

@Thegun I believe BR2049 attracted younger audience more. Also I never talked about the movie's quality, I loved the film but its too long and overstays its welcome.

BR2049 was 86% over 25.

I know, that's why Sparrow's argument felt weird. When I was in college. I literally had to watch a different version of this film in film class every year. The original is so highly regarded as a wine that has only gotten better with age. No one born in this century has ever heard of it, and when they watch it, they're not really impressed.

The most interesting fact about it that I love is that it basically invented a Director's cut that could alter a film. Nowadays, it's not necessarily a great thing, but it was pretty revolutionary and did make the film better.

For me it's a film that has been constantly forced on me to appreciate. And I do appreciate it for a few things But I don't necessarily like it. The only thing I can say about 2049 is the effects, and the performances are actually pretty good.

God I hate these movies. It's the equivalent of that old toy you punch, and then immediately comes back up laughing at you.

A toy that takes 35 years to come back up after you punch it, makes Rick a dull boy.

Read your first response to my post when I said that the movie is not enjoyable enough and you will get why (most of) your statement start to feel weird when you dismiss others opinion at the expense of yours and then say almost the same thing later. I still think the movie could have easily attracted more adults if it had great WoM and was more enjoyable.

Sounds like a lot of work. I don't dismiss opinions. "You are wrong" is not an argument. You asked about the breakdown, which I asked you about, and you were wrong. I commented and then gave further opinion not related to you.

To comment specifically on Sparrowned! How on earth if a film attracted 86% older adults, how could have it done better?

I have said, the movie banked on it being this "Godfather" type legacy of filmmaking for older audiences, (Who don't really go to the movies anymore, though it got about as good as it was going to) When in fact, it should have worked harder to appeal as it's own film and a cool Sci Film for younger audiences. I'm sure you could have marketed this like guardians of the galaxy. It would have terrible legs, but it would have had a much better opening.

If this movie dropped 45 minutes, added the two coolest scenes (Don't get me started on that) It would have done better for A: More screenings in a weekend = more $. B a more enjoyable movie (These types of films don't make money anymore. The first is a great example when you have the star of 3 of 4 biggest films of all time and it is a massive flop) The marketing was strong, but it was clearly wrong. It was Godfather 3 all over again.
