All I See Is You was moved to October 27th. Don't know why BOM hasn't updated their schedule. It's only supposed to open around 250 theaters.

American Assassin is an odd project (it almost strikes me as an R-rated YA movie--the young heartthrob being ushered into a CIA Hogwarts), but I am not sure it will completely flop. I have seen quite a bit of advertising for it, and it feels very action-oriented and apolitical, more Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit than Snowden.

mother! - 24
American Assassin - 13

mother! will be affected by It. I think it might creep over $12m.

American Assassin looks a bit too generic. Almost as if a Bulgarian-made action movie from 2007 has been re-edited with Dylan O'Brien's face on Scott Adkin's body. It will probably flop - it's in the right month for it!

No idea what the fuck All I See Is You is.

It being such a MEGA-HIT has pretty much negated any of this weeks openers from breaking out IMO, and that's kind of a shame since I think the marketing for Mother! has been pretty good. American Assassin on the other hand looks rather generic from the tv spots, and that's coming from someone who actually wants to see it.

Mother! - 17
American Assassin - 10

It- -50%

Hell I feel 17 Million for mother! is breaking out :P. It's possible it could have in another spot but after IT I can't really see that happening though there is interest. Positive reviews will help. Maybe the people who have already seen IT and aren't going again will be in the mood for another horror film and turn out for mother! even if it won't be what they're expecting.

American Assassin - $12.5 million

It -49%

I had mother! at $20+ million for a while, but It is just sucking all the air out of the room right now, and I feel like WOM after opening day is gonna be rough.

I think American Assassin can do decently though. Seems like the kind of thing middle America will happily go out to.

Anybody else see that new Mother! trailer in front of It? It didn't get much of a reaction from my audience, but man could I tell Paramount was trying hard. It must not be tracking that well if they feel forced to show so much of it, but kudos for them taking advantage like that. It might fall off a cliff after OD, but the marketing has been effective IMO.

Mother! should be good for high teens and AA good for mid teens as it seems to have a bit of a book fanbase behind it. Will be close.

Yeah it was attached to my showing of IT. Should certainly help.

What's really cool is that IT's second weekend should easily beat the previous September OW record.

I believe Jennifer Lawrence in a heavily advertised scary movie will be enough for 20m, even against It. People will hate it; it will implode almost immediately; etc., but I believe the opening three days will be strong.

JLaw is not a draw. Hunger Games would have smashed with any competent actress in the title role. Silver Linings Playbook was a slow burning sleeper/WOM hit. American Hustle had a huge ensemble cast and didn't open huge. Joy flopped. Passengers bordeline flopped and did badly on its OW. She's irrelevant to X-Men's success.

She's never opened a movie by herself. This, coming in the wake of IT, won't be the first time.

Mother!: $13m

Post Re: September 15-17 Predictions
While I agree that she is not an A-list box office draw (that just doesn't exist these days as it did in the Will Smith or Julia Roberts eras), Passengers did not flop or do badly on its opening weekend. It was a Christmas release and it topped $100m. Not too shabby at all, and Lawrence was the sole reason Joy opened to $17m. As I said, the era of one person starring in a film and that film getting a $40m opening on its way to $200m are long gone. No star has that anymore. The landscape has changed, so she is a draw within the dynamics of this era - though I agree that those Hunger Games flicks would've grossed $400m regardless of who starred in them.

mother! deserves to flop to teach the studio a lesson. Why would they move it to a week after IT? It doesn't make sense.

Paramount is actively trying to go bankrupt.

Things aren't looking good for mother!, but I do think an arthouse horror can exist alongside a blockbuster horror. And Aronofsky has somehow had two $100m films in a row. And Jlaw hasn't had a film gross under $50m in five years, though that also happened to be her last horror movie. I'm still giving it $20m, even as It does $60m. The movies are back bay bay!

Well except AA which looks exactly like the 7 dtv action movies released every week.

But American Assassin is still going to do better than mother! unfortunately. And mother! will crash and burn once WOM gets out.
