Re: $1b movies of 2018
haha, more people said Mission: Impossible 6 would make $1b than said Black Panther would. That's how much of a surprise it has been. Nobody knew or even had a clue it would be so huge. Don't believe anyone that says they did (one day before opening doesn't count).

Re: $1b movies of 2018
I was surprised Incredibles 2 hasn't reached $1 billion yet. Then I remembered that it hasn't been released in many markets yet. It's easily going to get there. Should get third for the year.

Re: $1b movies of 2018
I didn't mean it would be the third film past the mark. I meant it will out-gross JW2 (not JW3) to "get third for the year".
Dying to Survive isn't getting more than Wolf Warriors 2, and that was $300m away.

Dying to Survive isn't getting more than Wolf Warriors 2, and that was $300m away. Wolf Warriors was less than 150M away, but you are right about Dying To Survive not passing it.

I forgot it reached $870m. For some reason I thought it made $750m. Crazy numbers.

Re: $1b movies of 2018
I am rooting for JW2 to beat Bland Panther. It's only $200m away and Japan will give it at least $80m. In the US, it is still making decent money. Probably another $50m there. The rest could come from holdovers.

Re: $1b movies of 2018
Unfortunately JW was just as bland if not blander than BP, both are just disappointing blockbuster features, but I'd prefer BP over JW finally...although if we'd be talking about sequels preference I'd rather see one to JW than BP, there just seems no potential to get better from the first I feel, whereas with Dinosaurs you could go anywhere.

Hopefully Incredibles 2 or Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom have enough in the tank to reach 2nd place, but it's a big ask.

Nothing else really has the potential to get to $1 billion for the rest of the year.

Re: $1b movies of 2018
Yep on paper nothing else will get to $1b but there will be one breakout for sure. I'll wondering if Grinch breaks out domestically then Illumination's recent OS surge might get it past that mark.

Re: $1b movies of 2018
I mean, it's possible, but do you really see that happening? I don't see any film reaching $1 billion for the rest of the year. There's nothing that even looks like it could get remotely close. I suppose many people on this forum might say Mary Poppins Returns, but at best I see it doing $700m worldwide. At best. This is not going to be another Beauty and the Beast or Frozen.
Others:
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The first made $814 million, so this actually has a chance. But this series is consistent, and so adding $200 million to its worldwide gross would be unlikely, especially for a film that doesn't really look that different or add much compared to the first. 10% chance.
The Grinch - Illumination's highest-grossing original film so far only reached $875 million. This will need at least $300 million from the US to stand a chance, and I don't see that happening. I'd give it a 1% chance of grossing $1 billion.
Ralph Breaks The Internet - The first did not even make half-a-billion, so this has 0% chance.
Aquaman - No film in the DCEU has reached $1 billion yet, and this isn't the one to start it. 0% chance.

Re: $1b movies of 2018
I agree fantastic beats has the best shot on paper but it will be something totally unpredictable that will reach the mark. Its a big 5 month stretch and $1b mark is no longer as big as it used to be. I am hoping I've movie gets past the mark

What if BUMBLEBEE makes $500m in China?

mark66 wrote: What if BUMBLEBEE makes $500m in China? Why would it? TF4 made $320m. That was the peak of the franchise. TF5 only made $230m. The franchise is on a downward trend. And the Chinese are not as fond of the 80s as the west is. No way it suddenly doubles the previous' gross, especially as it's more of a low-key film being that it's a prequel and focusing on just one transformer. But sure, what if. What if it does? It still won't reach $1 billion worldwide as the last one made only $375 million outside of China. Oh, and FWIW Pacific Rim Uprising couldn't even crack $100 million in China. I think this all points toward Bumblebee not being a possibility to crack $500m, but more of a surprise if it manages to reach $200m.
