why did Phantom Menace have such a good multiplier?
I agree that the WOM was not that and among younger audiences it was flat out good, but it still doesn't explain why its multiplier was so good and it didn't show any frontloadedness
even if it had opened to about 85m which is likely would have happened I think with a Friday opening, that would be less than 20% of its total made on opening weekend

It was THE movie. It had 16 years of build up. Fanboys saw it 15+ times because it was a new mothafuckin Star Wars movie.

Yes. Everyone had to see it. A lot had to see it multiple times. It was a cultural event almost without compare. The sheer frenzy and passion overwhelmed at first, and the concerns festered and solidified afterward...affecting Attack of the Clones (coupled with Spider-Man competition).

It was a remake of the #11 domestic box office film of all time - comfort food for lazy audiences.

Re: why did Phantom Menace have such a good multiplier?
It was a pop culture event like nothing else. It truly was the most anticipated film of all time. In the days before advanced ticket sales (online) - people camped in line for weeks to get tickets and be the first to see it. This created further buzz as news outlets would report on the crazy camp outs.
It also didn't have saturation level screens on its OW (or at least not what we would have expected) as George Lucas was very selective with the theaters showing the film. Hence why the OW was slightly disappointing to some.
And without rampant piracy and rapid theater to video windows it hung around for a while due to repeat viewings.

Others have said it. We saw it in theaters multiple times.
