Post subject:  Re: KJ's Fall/Winter 2017 Box Office Contest - Charts up!

Woo! Besides The Greatest Showman, IT and Star Wars, my predictions seem in line with the average predictions of all the players.

I just think something feel good would do well at Christmas.

Haven't followed anything on IT before it blew up, so no idea it was so popular.

Forgot how much Star Wars grossed, lol. Thought it was $500m or something, or maybe that was Rogue One. Anyway, hopefully it plummets? Haha

I'm glad nobody picked Three Billboards for #10 because I bet that takes it. Wish I would have.

I think it will be a leggy hit. It has become a serious awards contender after all these glowing reviews and film fest attention. It has the right ingredients for a crowd-pleaser: family, crime, quirky comedy. $50m+ likely.

I also think Stronger and Only the Brave are good for #10. Heroic, inspirational, feel-good, politically correct. Can't go wrong with them unless they are really lazy bad films.

Post subject:  Re: KJ's Fall/Winter 2017 Box Office Contest - Charts up!

Eh. Three Billboards... doesn't seem huge to me, even if Frances McDormand wins Best Actress. It is a quirky, violent indie comedy. It will easily be bigger than In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, but I don't see a total higher than 50 million, which would be terrific for it.

I believe question no. 10 will go to either The Post (Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep--it will at least match Bridge of Spies' total) or the Christmas-themed animated film The Star.

Jonathan made an interesting choice with Roman J. Israel, Esq., the Denzel Washington legal drama from the director of Nightcrawler. Washington is a consistent draw, though this is more Fences than The Equalizer.

Post subject:  Re: KJ's Fall/Winter 2017 Box Office Contest - Charts up!

Is Three Billboards a violent film, as in Coen brothers style? If yes, it is unlikely to be a crowd-pleaser. But $50m+ is not hard to achieve with those reviews.

Post subject:  Re: KJ's Fall/Winter 2017 Box Office Contest - Charts up!

I assume so based on McDonagh's prior films. A murder or two, 500 f-bombs, a lot of mordant wit.

Even if it does 60m, do you believe Spielberg's The Post will earn less?

Post subject:  Re: KJ's Fall/Winter 2017 Box Office Contest - Charts up!

I think it will be a crowd-pleaser. It's getting a Best Picture nomination and McDormand will likely win Best Actress. I think it should do 70+, ala No Country For Old Men.

Those were the two I was thinking. I went with The Post but The Star could breakout. It won't help it that Coco premieres a week later though.

Just watched the red band trailer, very Coens-esque. If they play up the mother character arc, it still has a chance to surprise.

I completely forgot about The Post. It should have enough prestige and buzz to do Bridge of Spies number. Given the dry subject, it needs really good reviews and relevant marketing to break out like Lincoln.

Booo! Missed out on mother! by 1M :( It's cursing me until the end.

To me, The Post felt like Spotlight and Truth. I think audiences are going to be tired of journalism dramas. We'll see.
I went with Wonder. It's based on a popular book, and looks like an dark horse awards contender. It could crossover, so that's what I went with

I didn't choose THE POST because I didn't know it was THE PAPERS. :pinch:

Mother! will surely be a serious contender for question #7 (no one picked it).

Definitely won't be mother! now. It's not losing enough theaters for that. Friend Request could take it though. We'll see next weekend.

Post subject:  Re: KJ's Fall/Winter 2017 Box Office Contest - Charts up!

Friend Request is losing 492 this weekend. Otherwise it probably would be a slam dunk for question 7.

Post subject:  Re: KJ's Fall/Winter 2017 Box Office Contest - Charts up!

If it's losing that many this weekend imagine how many it will lose next weekend. A lot of theaters have to keep it for two weeks. They'll dump it as soon as they can. Mine cut it down to one showtime starting tomorrow.

Flatliners looks to be a solid contender for #7.

You guys beat me to the punch. Was going to comment Friend Request has to be a serious contender also (2 million on 2,573 screens on opening weekend is really pathetic). I was going to check out mother! this weekend and sadly its already been pulled from all my area theaters, might check out Wind River instead.
