THR is more conservative on Dunkirk.

Dunkirk - $17+m
Girls Trip - $11+m
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets - $7m

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/weekend-box-office-dunkirk-heads-45m-50m-us-debut-valerian-bombing-1023378

I am thinking $19m for Dunkirk, $10.5m for Girls Trip, and $5.5m for Valerian.

That would be great for Dunkirk and Girls Trip. Hopefully those numbers hold, but at the very least it seems like both should stay above $18M and $10M respectively.

If Girls Trip does 12.5 Million today it should go above 30 Million with ease.

Looking at MT percentage changes, Dunkirk has dropped over 1% from 36% to 35% since this morning, indicating some frontloading. Valerian has held steady at ~7.5%. Girls Trip has made big gains from 14% to 19%.

Is it that big of a surprise? APES and DUNKIRK both skew very old.

$17 including previews would be very low

RTH is saying he expects about $22m for Dunkirk. Would be a great number.

22m is great. Don't think anyone can open like that just on a director's name, pretty impressive.

RTH is also saying 13 for Girls Trip (wow), 6.5 for Valerian (boooo), 6 for Spidey and 5.5 for Apes.

man, those drops for Apes and SMH are bad.

It'll do 20m-22m.

Interstellar though didn't have a great preview/OD ratio nor a great weekend IM. So there is some concern. But it still ended up with close to 4x multiplier so I'm not too worried. i think 50m/200m is the low end for Dunkirk right now after those preview numbers.

Interstellar was pretty mainstream audience friendly. I don't think this is guaranteed to have the same legs.

Spileberg and Cameron are only ones in the discussion. Cameron its hard to tell though Avatar opened huge. Speilberg with right project is still a master but his audience has largely outgrown cinema

A Nolan directed Bond starring Jackman, Bale, or even Hardy would open to $150m.

BOG saying 20m. So 20m-22m range still seems it.

And Interstellar connected to audiences for sure but let's not just say a film that jumps massive amounts in time and ends with its character in a time vortex some tailored made mainstream film. Interstellar was a challenging big budget film too.

It was for sure, but I think Dunkirk takes that to another level. Makes Interstellar feel more conventional by comparison.

I always felt Dunkirk would be an easier sell than Interstellar, but I was unsure if that meant it would open over $50M or not. If these numbers stick than I would say Nolan's name is definitely still a big draw and now I'm curious to see what a smaller film from him would do. Not that I expect it him to step away from blockbusters anytime soon, but in order to really compare him to Spielberg I think it could be interesting to see the results when he is away from all the big budget spectacle.

I still think Nolans drawing power with the 50 and older crowd is pathetic. He just has a strangehold on the 18-35 crowd.

Friend and I watched Dunkirk last night. I was quite hyped to see this and friend less so. He said he wouldn't recommend it. I thought it was meh. This should not connect with GA. It's very meticulous while being minimal in scope and I think that hurts any replayability.

I can't believe Deadline hasn't updated yet with other Friday box office numbers.

Deadline is saying 20m for Dunkirk as well.

That would be a somewhat high preview/OD share though this summer has shown that the ratio doesn't matter that significantly for holds. Breaking 20m OD for Dunkirk is a accomplishment no matyte what and should put it on course for a 50m+ OW.

Pretty great number after some of the tracking was at 30-35 weekend.
