What is so great about Baby Driver's gross? Is it because Edgar Wright has never had a film crack $40m?

Let's say it makes $80m total as Jack Sparrow claims. It cost $34m to produce. I mean, that is ookkaayyyy in terms of ROI, but not groundbreaking like people seem to be making out. It may break-even with the US gross, but doesn't seem to be lighting up the box office abroad. Why are people so damn pleased with its performance? It is average at best, and should have done better considering its stellar reviews.

Because it had a lot going against it. A stupid title (I don't mind it, especially after seeing the film, but I know many thought it sounded dumb) probably being the biggest obstacle. Honestly this could have flopped with like 30-40 Million and it did the high end of that in the first week. It's an original and inventive film and they often get overlooked. Guarantee with poor reviews this would have flopped. It's great to see how much reviews made a difference in its fate and that people are out seeing a great movie thanks to them. I think it has a great shot at getting to 100 Million. It's a smashing success. Most did not think it would do this well.

I'm not going to bother debating where the line is on it being a success or not, but I disagree that it is a "smashing success".

It is on its way to being one ;). If it does 100 Million I'll consider it one. Either way it's a hit.

Agree was Mike said on factors being against it to do well specially in summer where these kind of movies can easily get lost. I would not call it smashing success as well even if it does $100m but definitely a great performance from an original.

looks like this will finish with 90m+. If it keeps dropping in the 30's it could hit 100m.

It needs a 4-4.5 multiplier from this weekend to reach $100 million, and considering how it first two drops greatly outstripped everything save Wonder Woman I think it's in a very good position. Sony is one of the thirstiest studios for milestones (see: Passengers, Spectre), so if it reaches $97-98 million I think they'll push it all the way.

Yeah it would probably get a re-release Labor Day weekend or the weekend after. I don't see it not getting to 100 Million.

This should lead to bigger projects from Mr. Wright

Definitely. Sony will push it to the mark if necessary.

Even though it will have tough competition this weekend, the summer weekdays and weaker competition between next weekend and September 8 should be light.

It will land between Passengers and This is the End's domestic gross.

I think it will have a similar run to Let's Be Cops. Think of it this way:
1. 100% RT. Even the annoying Armond White praised it.
2. Scott Pilgrim (video game films haven't always done well in the last 15 years) and The Nice Guys (Cop Comedy set in the 70s doesn't appeal well under the age of 30) were tougher sells. The former had tough competition against The Other Guys, The Expendables, Inception, and Salt while the latter had Captain America: Civil War, Neighbors, Angry Birds.
3. Other than Wonder Woman and Guardians of the Galaxy 2, every other film this summer has either flopped or underperformed.

I will agree that Edgar Wright hasn't had a stellar record but Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz did okay numbers and ended up being profitable due to smaller budgets while SP flopped completely. After all, his last film, "Ant-Man" succeeded with critics and audiences.

Despite I'm standing by my prediction of a similar run to Let's Be Cops, I wouldn't be surprised for a $100M total.

This $75M+ club has definitely succeeded. It is only less than $23M away from the $100M Mark. It will do it!!!!

I would have been shocked at an over 50m gross not very long ago and this is going to double that. Great call with this club, congrats.

Still staying above $1m mark over weekdays and I would think it would still continue for most of next week. It needs one more week of good holds which should be enough for a $100m total LOCK.

If it doesn't make it to $75m, it won't be for lack of promotion - I haven't seen more advance ads in various media for any other movie this year.

The studio is continuing the full court press on the promotion for Baby Driver - I continue to see more advertising for it than any other movie this year. If it makes it to $100m, it will be because they spent $200m on ad buys.

Where's your proof of this? If you don't show it to me, then it didn't happen. #ByeFelicia

Where are there ever accurate numbers for promotional budgets? It lies at the very heart of showbiz fudging and prevarication. $200m is simply my guesstimate based on the saturation of ads I have personally seen - beginning almost two months before the movie's release and still continuing full bore as it enters it's fourth week. There's been nothing else like this level of ad buys this year. And if I were Edgar Wright, I'd be very pleased that my studio was giving my project the big push. No matter how crazy expensive this promotion campaign ends up, it is likely still a great investment in Wright levelling up in the director ranks and building hype for his next movie.

Yay for FINALLY hitting $100M. Well deserved for this wonderful film and one of the best movies of the decade.

Also, where did you hear the source that it will be pushed into more theaters on the 25th?
