looks like Apes is doing similar to Star Trek Beyond last year. What is with audiences rejecting totally good installments in these sci fi franchises?

I agree. I think the trend is towards superhero movies and original blockbusters. Plus Star Wars is quite filling up the quota with a steady sci-fi franchise that most people seem to be watching.
