Post is the Pirates franchise dead now?
it is still doing well overseas but has fallen off domestically

I would like at least one more film with a proper reunion with the main three characters. Also getting Gore Verbinski back would be a good idea

Its doing well in OS markets and that's what is important. Alice 2 is what would be considered "dead". Pirates with a great movie can still rebound back in States.

Disney has got to rein in the budget on these things. Even the reported $230M for Pirates 5 is way too much for a film that's looking to gross $750-800M WW, 75% of that overseas.

How much power does Depp even have to demand an enormous paycheck when he's in financial trouble

I think Pirates 6, if they make it, should focus on Will and Elizabeth and Depp should either not appear or have a small part.

I think that the franchise must have met its floor with this one. The audience going to see them at this point does not care about reviews.I think a 6th could do on par with this one.

They seem incapable of keeping the budgets for these at less than $250m so probably, yeah. Another one would probably take 5+ years to get made and inevitably decrease once again, and at that point it may be a financial risk for Disney. They have so many other big franchises that they don't have to care anymore.

A Pirates movie without Sparrow? Atrocious!! It will flop big time in OS markets.

If this one does at least 700m WW they should do a last film with the original trio.

There was some polling where 40% of audience came for sparrow. This was domestic. Without depp it will bomb OS for sure. I heard horrible stuff about bloom in Pirates 5 as well. But getting back Keira in a non trivial role should help.

Pirates 6 will happen for sure and will continue to drop. There is no way they can make a "great" Pirates movie again. 1st film was a perfect storm that cannot happen again.

It could go either way. It's telling it took them 6 years to do this one despite On Stranger Tides making 1 billion WW. But getting Bloom back would help.

Is there any way they can come up with a Pirates plot, that like, barely involves ships and water and therefore doesn't get out of control budget wise. Like can you just make these characters searching for treasure on an island somewhere?

The budget this time is fine. It needs to be seen if this will cross $1b WW and be profitable. If they keep the budget same as this one and generate enough interest for another installment and get it past $1b WW mark they can continue with this budget. Plus I feel the marketing on POTC5 wasn't exhaustive and expensive as the last few times.

Not to hijack the thread (whistles, does so anyway), but a more interesting question: is the Ridley Scott's Alien-prequel franchise dead now? I wonder if there is any chance Covenant ekes it out overseas, and Fox lets Scott do one more to tie together David and the planet where Ripley's crew sees the space jockey.

If Fox gives Ridley Scott another shot, it will probably be radically different than what he has in mind currently since 1) the budget will be lower and 2) prior to Covenant's release he suggested the next film would take place after Prometheus but before the new one. I can't believe that Fox will greenlight that idea now.

I thought the marketing peaked with the Superbowl spot which caused the buzz to explode. The hype then died after that after the marketing went back to OST lite

Superbowl spot wasn't exactly great and I think the marketing never essentially peaked for this version.

These #s will be way different with actual figures as opposed to random estimates, but if Pirates makes a 200m+ profit when it's all said and done... we're getting Pirates 6.

The franchise is just starting to see drops globally. It is not dead yet. They can squeeze more profit from one or two more sequels.

That means nothing. If it makes money, they'll make another or a spin-off or a reboot. Nothing this big gets cancelled forever unless it makes sub-$100m.

As I mentioned elsewhere it was marketed here as the Final adventure for the series but it could easily change if this version comes close to $900m WW mark.

Even $800m or $700m would get another made. It sells tons of merchandise and the ride probably benefits from each installment too.

I might think twice for that $700m total. The whole process of shooting in sea takes a lot of effort which is why I believe they make them slower than usual blockbusters.
