The last few Pirates didn't have good reviews so I don't think the opening will drastically change for this like $150m to $100m. Its doing sub-$100m and that should still happen I see only about $5m difference in OW.

Baywatch needed decent reviews to succeed and Pirates needed decent reviews to not have a big drop from the last film.

Baywatch reviews are toxic. Ouch.

Quite surprising really. Central Intelligence put up a 69% on RT and The Rock is usually charming enough to make a bad movie work.

Its not really that surprising. The movie looks crap and the story line doesn't seem to do justice to the series. Was Baywatch a comedy in the first place or did the audience/critics expect that from a Baywatch movie?

May was a pretty crappy month overall in terms of quality and box-office IMO and I have a feeling it's going to end on such a lackluster note. I'm hoping for the best come June/July, but I can't help but get flashbacks of last year or Summer 2014 which were both equally disappointing. It might be true that studios putting out too many blockbusters in the first couple of months of the year is really starting to drain the potential of summer movies.

All I care about this weekend is seeing that Alien Covenant drop.

Exactly and specially this year where March felt like bigger month than any of the Summer months in terms of high potential movies one of which is most likely going to do more than any summer movie.

There are BOGO deals for Baywatch this weekend from what I hear. Such does not inspire confidence.

Baywatch has previews tonight and has yet to appear on MT. Not a good sign.

Baywatch screenings start in 7 minutes, still not on MT. Wonder if previews will even hit $1m.

Anecdotal reports of strong walk-ups in many areas. Not on MT is concerning, though. Who knows how it will play out.

So what do we expect the opening day to be for Baywatch and Pirates?

I'm thinking Baywatch does 6m Thursday and 10m Friday. Pirates probably around 20-22m, with around 4m previews.

Baywatch - $36.5m
Pirates - $79/80m

I think the previews for Baywatch will be strong but they won't translate to great weekend. It will be frontloaded as hell. Reminds me of Entourage movie where the Tuesday previews were bigger than Wednesday numbers.

I know they are $16 each, but selling only 15 tickets for tonight's RPX Pirates preview is pretty bad. We'll see if walkups are heavy.

Fandango has been silent on Pirates 5, suggesting it is failing to outsell On Stranger Tides despite releasing six years later. Not good.

I wonder, I think it might have been a good idea to release Captain Underpants this weekend. Boss Baby and Beauty and the Beast are both 2 months+ old, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid bombed. There is almost nothing just for families.

2013 - Epic 42.8M 4 day OW
2011 - Kung Fu Panda 2 60.9M 4 day OW
2005 - Madagascar 61M 4 day OW

Idk if it's been heavily advertised on TV but the marketing push for Captain Underpants seems muted. Plus the first trailer came out pretty late.

It just seems a waste not to have a bigger family option on a holiday weekend.

I think Pirates is supposed to be the "family" flick for the weekend.

I honestly have no idea what either film is going to do this weekend.

I guess but I wonder why it wasn't reported for Wednesday numbers? Were those special preview screenings for Baywatch on Tuesday?
