Re: Coco predictions
If you consider Mexico to be part of North America boxoffice wise then Coco is over performing

Re: Coco predictions
Can we talk about Coco in China? It's at 184 m in China! This has been one of the most surprising runs globally this year. Even Disney was shocked by its performance there. For anyone wondering why this is so groundbreaking, Pixar's best performance thus far there was Finding Dory at $38,052,302.

Re: Coco predictions
It is indeed surprising to see those insane numbers for Coco in China. Is there any explanation to this over-performance?

Re: Coco predictions
Coco celebrates the remembrance of ancestral memory, which should resonate with people in China.

Really? They don't seem to do much more than burning papers here.

Re: Coco predictions
Oh yeah? Burning paper-made valuables is a way of saying "good journey" and "live a good afterlife" to the dead. There are other ways of paying respect such as a family get-together and observing a moment of silence. You can feel the emphasis of ancestry and family ties in many old literature.

Re: Coco predictions
I mean that's all true but then again not all movies of the same nature connect, the recent example being Kubo to a similar extent. Ancestory and traditions also common in India and generally in all Asian markets but this movie became outlier in China specially it being animation is surprising.

Re: Coco predictions
The spirits of the dead returning to the land of the living for a day is a Chinese cultural thing too. So it is easy for them to get into the story. The movie has plenty of emotional drama which Chinese audience might like. And I guess there are not many Hollywood movies in release. Disney might have some under-the-table deal with the Chinese government to secure a wide and long release window (in return for more Chinese overseeing their production and censorship). So that and the lack of competition help Coco in China.
