Believe it or not, trivialities were not not focused on and blown out of proportion back in the 90s. People were not shamelessly seeking any and every angle to make a scoop or a controversy.

They did not come across as gay in the original. Maybe I was too young and not sensitive enough to remember.

Actually the extra publicity generated by the controversy might have helped the box office. Beauty and the Beast (2017) has made over $3m through Sunday. That would be equivalent to a $150m 3-day OW in North America.

Each $1m is equivalent to $50m in the US. Cool.

Yeah, HK is worth more under the almighty authoritarian.

Or HK is 1/50 the size of the US and Canada combined, population-wise.

Yeah that's not good for power rangers. The marketing here wasn't good enough to attract teens so I guess it would be the same in HK.

Power Rangers is a decades-old property. It is probably past its prime in Hong Kong.

The last two weeks were quite exciting. We saw three imports from Japan doing great business in semi-wide and limited platforms. HK Film Award winner Mad World saw its box office spike in the wake of collecting three trophies (two supporting actors and new director).

A Silent Voice: The Movie has made $134,000 (~50 daily shows) the first four days through Sunday, April 9.

Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale showed no fear opening the same day as Ghost in the Shell (2017), given that they both targeted manga fans. Exhibitors initially low-balled it and had to subsequently add shows to around 100 to accommodate market demands. It has made $530,000 through Sunday.

In this Corner of the World, an animated drama set in WWII, also debuted two weeks ago. Critical acclaim and WOM have carried this niche film to $238,000 through Sunday.

Mad World, a film about a mentally ill guy in the custody of his father coping with the accidental killing of his mother and reconciling with his father and the society at large, saw it top the box office chart for three days after three HKFA wins. It has banked $1,096,000 through Sunday.

Other movies:

Ghost in the Shell (2017) $2,109,000

The Boss Baby $748,000 (two-day previews only)

Beauty and the Beast (2017) $8,330,000

Life $1,113,000

Logan $4,930,000

Kong: Skull Island $3,045,000

Post HK: Trivisa wins Best Picture; Beauty tops 2017 chart
Indies ‘Trivisa’ and ‘Mad World’ Triumph at Hong Kong Film Awards
by Patrick Frater

Quote:
Independent films dominated proceedings at the Hong Kong Film Awards on Sunday. But political sensitivities meant that the ceremony was not fully screened on TV in mainland China.

“Trivisa,” an independent, low-budget drama set at the time of the territory’s handover to China, took five prizes, including the best film award. It was followed by another indie “Mad World,” with three trophies.

“Trivisa,” produced by Johnnie To, collected the directing award for the ensemble of Frank Hui, Jevons Au and Vicky Wong, best actor of Gordon Lam, best screenplay and best editing. “Mad World,” which tackles the issue of mental illness, earned best supporting actor and actress prizes for Eric Tsang and Taiwan’s Elaine Jin, respectively, and the best new director award for Wong Chun.

For the second year in a row, television coverage of the event was not carried live and in its entirety. Live updates of some websites were reportedly blocked when “Trivisa” was mentioned. The film cannot be released in China, as it portrays instances of corruption by mainland officials. Co-director Au, was also one of the directors of “Ten Years.” A nihilistic future vision of Hong Kong under mainland rule, “Ten Years” is similarly not allowed in China and its multiple wins at the ceremony last year meant that 2016 awards show was not screened in the mainland.

Hong Kong’s biggest names and biggest commercial titles were largely ignored. “The Monkey King 2” collected two technical awards, “Cold War 2” only one and “Operation Mekong” just one. There were no prizes for Stephen Chow’s “The Mermaid,” despite eight nominations.

Hong Kong Film Awards, 2017 Prize Winners

Best film: “Trivisa”
Best director: Frank Hui, Jevons Au, Vicky Wong for “Trivisa”

Best supporting actress: Elaine Jin in “Mad World”
Best new performer: Tony Wu in “Weeds on Fire”

Best film editing: Allen Leung, David Richardson for “Trivisa”
Best art direction: “See You Tomorrow”
Best costume and make-up design: “The Monkey King 2”

Some clarifications. The awards show was carried live and in its entirety on TV in Hong Kong. It was in China where part of the show (probably where Trivisa was mentioned) was censored. News outlets in China omitted the Best Picture winner in the winners' list. The film's wins in other categories were mentioned with the omission of the film title. So people would see the film's winning actors' names on the list but not the film's title.

Co-director Jevons Au is currently being blacklisted by China (for co-directing last year's Best Picture winner Ten Years). He is barred from working in any Chinese co-productions. His name cannot appear in media outlets. Ridiculous it is.

While Ghost in the Shell (2017) was criticized by HK critics for oversimplifying the concept of the original and lacking a soul, it was praised for its visuals and good mash-up of CG and Hong Kong location shots. It is the best film at capturing the mind-bending urbanity of the territory in recent memory.

Post HK: Trivisa wins Best Pic; Boss Baby poses real challenge to
Thursday, April 13

1. (NEW) Fate of the Furious
Admissions: 57,000 (580 shows)
Gross: $684,000

2. (NEW) The Boss Baby
Admissions: 41,000 (330 shows)
Gross: $350,000 (Total $1.1m)

3. (WK 3) Mad World
Admissions: 8,700 (140 shows)
Gross: $77,000 (Total $1.45m)

4. (NEW) Smurfs: The Lost Village
Admissions: 7,100 (170 shows)
Gross: $58,000

5. (WK 5) Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Admissions: 3,000 (50 shows)
Gross: $26,000 (Total $8.52m)

Fate of the Furious won Thursday handily, beating a very strong Boss Baby. It had two inherent advantages: more shows and higher ticket price (film length/4DX surcharge). The Boss Baby was actually the more impressive because it faced direct competition from Smurfs: The Lost Village and it was a non-sequel.

This Baby is for real. Currently it is running neck and neck with F8 in #tickets sold on Saturday, with each selling 36,000. Sure F8 will win it with pricier tickets and more crowded evening shows. But The Boss Baby does put up a challenge with its localized and clever advertising.

Even with Monday being a holiday, everything except Smurfs decreased on Sunday.

Kid films are thriving on Easter Monday. As of 1:45pm HKT, The Boss Baby has sold over 34,000 tickets versus F8's 26,000. Smurfs has jumped into the third place with 8,000 tickets sold.

Unlikely, given the higher ticket price for F8. But TBB should match it in admissions.

F8 has made $2.94m through Sunday, up 16% from F7's OW. But it failed to beat the Beast's $3.23m OW. It should be noted that F8 had 50% more showtimes than F7 did two years ago.

Alien: Covenant and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword both open today (May 11). Looking at daily presales, Alien is outselling King Arthur by 9:1.

Local romantic dramedy Love off the Cuff is hanging in there in week 3. Also in week 3, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a little behind getting hit hard by the openers. Despite that, it has already passed its predecessor last weekend.

More numbers later.
