2. (NEW) John Wick 2 ~$100,000
3. (WK 3) La La Land ~$65,000 (Total $3.1m)

50 Shades Darker registered over 12,000 admissions Thursday, on par with the opening day of the first movie. John Wick 2 sold close to 11,000 tickets, more than double the number the original movie did. The LEGO Batman Movie, on the other hand, got buried on a school day. In comparison, The LEGO Movie made $260,000 in OD, which was during the Lunar New Year holiday.

14. (NEW) I, Daniel Blake 592
15. (NEW) 52 Hz, I Love You (Taiwan) 425
16. (WK 4) Land of Mine 285

Not much has changed since Thursday. Well, The LEGO Batman Movie is starting to climb up the chart as the weekend draws closer. It could take the top spot Saturday and Sunday. La La Land and Resident Evil 6 are battling for the top earner of the Lunar New Year holiday. La La Land is currently $600k behind, but if it stays leggy, it will make it. It is strange that the supposedly festive Cook up a Storm opened on a Friday two weeks after the Lunar New Year. It was destined to bomb.

1. Fifty Shades Darker 17,076
2. La La Land 11,711
3. John Wick 2 10,779
4. The LEGO Batman Movie 3,741
5. Cook up a Storm 3,563
6. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter 3,129
7. Split 2,959
8. Love Contractually (previews) 2,439
9. Hidden Figures 2,309
10. The Yuppie Fantasia 3 1,539
11. Jackie 1,344
12. SCOOP! 948
13. The Space Between Us (previews) 711
14. 52 Hz, I Love You 627
15. I, Daniel Blake 575

The day acted like a holiday. Fifty Shades Darker, La La Land, Cook up a Storm, and Love Contractually (previews) apparently benefited from it. Love Contractually sneaks hit 100 tickets sold per show. This bodes well for its official Thursday release.

Lunar New Year films' performance (through Sunday, Feb 12):

1. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter $3,824,558 (released 1/26)
2. La La Land $3,393,827 (released 1/26)
3. Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back $3,093,437 (released 1/28)
4. Moana $2,712,510 (released 1/26)
5. Split $2,072,578 (released 1/19)
6. The Yuppie Fantasia 3 $1,981,056 (released 1/26)
7. xXx: Reactivated ~$1,640,000 (released 1/19)

Nothing stands out like Deadpool ($7.48m) and The Mermaid ($7.12m) last year. But we are seeing more leggy runs (La La Land and Split) this year.

Post Re: HK: 50 Shades, La La Land, John Wick 2 dominate Valentin
Thursday, February 16:

1. (WK 2) Fifty Shades Darker ~$58,000 (-52% from last week) (Total: $1m)
2. (WK 2) John Wick 2 ~$52,000 (-48%) (Total: $860k)
3. (NEW) A Cure for Wellness ~$45,000
4. (NEW) Love Contractually (HK/China) ~$39,000
5. (WK 4) La La Land ~$39,000 (-40%) (Total: $3.65m)
6. (NEW) Kung Fu Yoga (HK/China) ~$17,000
7. (WK 4) Resident Evil: The Final Chapter ~$15,000 (-67%) (Total: $3.94m)
8. (NEW) Lion ~$14,000
9. (WK 5) Split ~$14,000 (-46%) (Total: $2.2m)
10. (WK 2) The LEGO Batman Movie ~$14,000 (-53%) (Total: $640k)

Outside the top 10:
(NEW) Miss Sloane ~$9,100
(NEW) Because I Love You (South Korea) ~$800

A quiet opening day. A Cure for Wellness is no cure for the gonna-be-slow weekend but at least it leads the openers. Its OD number was okay compared to that in North America.

Love Contractually does not connect outside the comfort zone of the Valentine's Day. Pairing up a HK pop star and a famous Taiwan actor in a rom-com set in mainland China? Seems too foreign to HK viewers.

Kung Fu Yoga is DOA, as expected. But there is a consolation prize for Jackie Chan: the movie almost doubled the OD of his previous flop Railroad Tiger.

Lion should see good increases on the weekend as it appeals to families and is likely to have excellent WOM. Miss Sloane is getting great reviews but its subject matter is too distant to have a large following.

Post Re: HK: 50 Shades stays atop, A Cure for Wellness claims thi
Updates:

A Cure for Wellness actually did fine by horror movie standard in HK. It made $257,520 through Sunday, February 19. That was equivalent to a $11m weekend in North America.

Hidden Figures will close with about $660,000 in the bank. That is a good sum given the relatively unknown main cast. If this movie was made in China, it would be considered a vehicle for "stability maintenance" (維穩) and viewed in HK with more skepticism.

La La Land ($3.91m) was only $110,000 behind Resident Evil: The Final Chapter ($4.02m) through Sunday. It will likely claim the top earner of the Lunar New Year this weekend.

It is another close race between John Wick 2 and Fifty Shades Darker. John Wick 2 won Saturday and Sunday. It is too early to say which will make more in finals. Through Sunday, Fifty Shades Darker ($1.23m) was $70,000 ahead of John Wick 2 ($1.16m).

Eh, that's not the film to compare it with, in my opinion. It should be compared with CZ12.

Well, Railroad Tigers is the closest comparison I can find because it's the most recent Jackie Chan movie released on the same scale as Kung Fu Yoga. Railroad Tigers had 69 showings in its January debut while Kung Fu Yoga had 65 showings. CZ12 had 167 showings in 2012 and eventually made $2m. KFY's gross was a miserable $300k $200k (last I checked).

I see. Interesting that Chan's films are getting noticeably less showtimes in Hong Kong, while his box office revenues in China continue to be high.

Chan's been losing likability and credibility in HK. Only fans buy his bullshit talks.

Maybe not even all fans are anymore. I used to be a fan. Well, I still am, I guess, but with the condition of only liking the pre-2010 Chan. I dislike Chan ever since his films started to change around 2011 or 2012.

Not a fan. But I saw most of his 90's movies on cable or DVD. His Hollywood movies were less exciting. I heard his latest were even worse but I have not seen them.

Post Re: HK: John Wick 2 closes in on Fifty Shades Darker
February 23-26 weekend:

A pretty slow weekend. Patriots Day opened at #1 with ~$330,000 (or equivalent to $14m 3-day in North America). La La Land was #2 with a cumulative total of $4.2m. It is officially the top earner of the Lunar New Year, passing Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. John Wick 2 has banked $1.46m through Sunday, slightly behind Fifty Shades Darker's $1.5m.

Rings and The Space Between Us disappointed. Rings rang up $129,000, less than half of what A Cure for Wellness made last weekend. The latter film has made $415,000 through Sunday. The Space Between Us fared worse, traversing with only $70,000 for the weekend.

In limited release, two Oscars favorites officially opened before the awards show. Moonlight has lit up $93,000 through Sunday including previews. Manchester by the Sea sailed through with $72,000. Both films on average sold over 60 tickets per show.

Post HK Thursday: Logan scores big
Thursday, March 2

Logan
44,000 admissions (~400 showings)
$360,000

Comparisons:

X-Men: Apocalypse
34,000 admissions (470 showings)
$500,000

X-Men: Days of Future Past
41,000 admissions (460 showings)
$520,000

The Wolverine
19,000 admissions (255 showings)
$260,000

Without the help of 3D, Logan delivered a gross less than the last two entries of the X-Men series. But it sold more tickets. Not bad at all. Even impressive considering it is a Category III (NC-17) film.

(NEW) Toni Erdmann (Germany) ~$3,100 (7 showings)
(NEW) Someone (Japan) ~$2,600 (20 showings)

Two UK releases duked it out and The Girl with All the Gifts narrowly beat T2 Trainspotting. By the way, the zombie movie shared something common with Logan - a girl protagonist.

Post HK: Beauty is a beast amid ho-hum gay controversy
Thursday, March 16

Beauty and the Beast fell short of Batman v Superman but was on par with Logan in OD admissions. BvS had the advantage of Easter holiday though. BatB had the advantage of 3D/IMAX 3D surcharge over Logan. The aggressive marketing and the gay controversy propelled by some anti-gay Christian group probably helped its gross.

Beauty And the Beast (2017)
45,000 admissions (540 shows)
$530,000

Comparisions:

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
72,000 admissions (560 shows)
$1,020,000

Logan
44,000 admissions (~400 shows)
$360,000

Kong: Skull Island
28,000 admissions (360 shows)
$285,000

Zootopia
21,000 admissions (280 shows)
$240,000

Maleficent
13,000 admissions (235 shows)
$155,000

Cinderella (2015)
10,000 admissions (250 shows)
$97,000

The gay "controversy" in HK:
Quote:
Choi Chi-sum, an outspoken far right evangelical and the chief executive of The Society for Truth and Light, said it was a good film and he would recommend children to watch the film, after watching it himself.

“From the point of view of promotion strategy, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ has already sparked discussion before its screening - it is very smart,” he said.

The film opened in Hong Kong on Thursday. He said he went to an early showing to see for himself, to make a real judgment instead of believing in rumours.

In a social media post on Thursday, he attached a screenshot of a report on the protest by the Sexual Orientation Discrimination Ordinance Concern Group to the Disney office in Hong Kong, led by activist Roger Wong Wai-ming, where they urged Disney to cut the scene.

Choi did not directly address the protest in his words, but said: “The so-called gay scene is so subtle, it’s merely an interpretation and bragging by some of the film’s crew. I believe most parents, unless they have a bias, would not think the said scene is beautifying homosexuality.”

He added: “Maybe gays should protest as well; the two alleged homosexuals are loathsome villains in the film.”

https://www.hongkongfp.com/2017/03/17/beautiful-beastly-hong-kongs-anti-gay-campaigners-loggerheads-disneys-gay-moment/

That anti-gay group (Sexual Orientation Discrimination Ordinance Concern Group) said nothing when Moonlight received a PG-13 rating. lol
