Re: Alien: Covenant 175m+ Club
As much as I would like for it to happen I say OUT. I'm already happy if it does between 100-125m.

Re: Alien: Covenant 175m+ Club
Lawlrus. It would need a $70m+ opening for this. Not happening.
Maybe if this had been Alien 5 instead of Prometheus 2, but even that would be a huge stretch. Prometheus had mountains of buzz and could only manage a $50m opening.

This has "sequel nobody wanted" written all over it. It won't make $100m.

No, man. You are expecting it to make slightly less than James Cameron's Aliens did adjusted.

Re: Alien: Covenant 175m+ Club
I know it's crazy. If a film with the title "Prometheus" can make $126m, then having "Alien" in the title should guarantee it more, right? Yes. But that trailer looked overly like Scott is trying to make an artsy alien film. I don't know. I know I'm going out on a limb with my prediction.

Re: Alien: Covenant 175m+ Club
My post referred to Magnus' prediction. Also, not sure having "Alien" in the title guarantees it more. I mean no Alien film prior to Prometheus has crossed $100 million.

Never. Prometheus trailer was yuge and that failed mightily.
With regards to pop culture changes, 2012 is a lot more than 5 years ago.

Re: Alien: Covenant 175m+ Club
I think the novelty of going full horror again could give it a Conjuring 2 type run. That's probably best case though. And Prometheus was a great title.

No. The trailer does not bring anything new. People who were sour on Prometheus won't come back unless the movie is awesome. Which I doubt it will be.

Re: Alien: Covenant 175m+ Club
When was the last time, a non-comedic R-rated film without strong Oscar buzz hit $175 million?
300, ten years ago. The Passion of the Christ before that. The Matrix Reloaded before that.

Re: Alien: Covenant 175m+ Club
Yeah I'm OUT. The buzz is there, but I doubt it reaches Prometheus levels of hype. I see a low 40's opening at best with a total in the low 100's.

Re: Alien: Covenant 175m+ Club
POTA adjusts to 214 million so that didn't happen. and the Burton one is still the winner at almost 275 adjusted. Prometheus was on par with Alien 3 adjusted, and in both cases, they had everything going for it. But the films didn't deliver. Say what you want about Prometheus, but it had the layoff wait, the anticipation of Ridley returning, etc. And so far, that marketing campaign was leagues better.
It won't increase over Prometheus for the mere fact it was such a split film, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes was pretty highly regarded. We now know Scott can fuck the genre he created, and the cast is a major step down. You needed one solid cast member outside of Fassbender. Danny McBride as the #2 most well known actor is not the right direction. The first has Theron, Alba, Wilson, Pierce, Tom hardy look alike, Fassbender, and the non American "Dragon"

I don't think it will have the legs to get there, though I do see a really good opening.

Then I realized you just meant Idris Elba.

Re: Alien: Covenant 175m+ Club
Early reviews are out and so far they are mostly positive. I still don't see this coming anywhere close to $175M, but I wouldn't be surprised if this opened to $45-$50M. The marketing by Fox has been great IMO and it sounds like general audiences should like this more than Prometheus since it is a more straight up Alien/horror film.

Re: Alien: Covenant 175m+ Club
$175m+ is a bit too much for this. I can see it matching Prometheus with decent reviews its having but it should mostly likely be less than $100m IMO.
