Re: KJ's Winter/Spring 2017 Box Office Contest
Your prediction represents the high end of its potential, I feel. I honestly believe it is going to badly, badly flop; a 6/13 type of run. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will crush it only a few days into its run.

Yeah, so BK could gain a few points on me with that one.

Re: KJ's Winter/Spring 2017 Box Office Contest
Fuck!!!!! Inferno only made $34m. First made $217m. Second made $133m. Third absolutely collapsed.
But I still am quite confident in Hank's ability to draw a crowd. Larry Crowne is crap and it made $35m, but sure, that was 6 years ago. They still have a few weeks until The Circle is released. I think they can make it a decent amount of money. I don't think $35m is out of the question. It has Hanks and Watson, who both have fan bases, and it is also Bill Paxton's final film (or one of), which they may be able to play up a little. A total somewhere in the region of what The Island made wouldn't surprise me.

I think The Circle had some buzz when the trailer released. Seems like something that can open in the mid teens.

Something mildly interesting... It's looking like this question will flip sometime this week - currently Kong: Skull Island and Split are winning this, with $294.1 million. However, Logan and Powers Rangers are right behind it with $293.1 million. I don't see the combination of The Fate of the Furious and Smurfs: The Lost Village being too far off from these either.

MGKC wrote: Jack Sparrow wrote: I wonder if TBB could have decent legs and ruin the Top 5 again this game. That's very true - I think all of us pretty much counted out that movie completely before this past weekend. Fox's lowest multiplier for a spring animation release was Rio 2, with a 3.3 multiplier. That would put The Boss Baby at $167 million - just above my current projection for Kong: Island. I kinda hope that happens to keep up the tradition of no one nailing the top 5. (I really messed up by not having Get Out be a predicted movie - it wasn't even in the poll in the planning thread! ) The Boss Baby better turn it around - after that not great 2nd weekend drop, I have a harder time seeing it pass Kong: Skull Island. That is, if it has Rio 2 legs. With Home's legs, it makes $169 million, which would be enough to pass Kong. Chippy, Flava'd, publicenemy#1, scoobydelite, and stuffp better hope it doesn't pass Kong. With the exception of publicenemy#1, they're all toward the bottom of the ranks. With that 15-point bonus (and 1pt for each correct rank), that would definitely send them to the top 5.

Re: KJ's Winter/Spring 2017 Box Office Contest
TBB did decent but it wasn't a big hold it should have had. Also given the holds of Kong it looks like it will overtake Batman in the end which would have been killed this weekend for sure with Smurfs opening, TBB kicking and 58% theatre drop. I see that ending at $175m. If Kong survives next weekend it would easily pass Batman.

Re: KJ's Winter/Spring 2017 Box Office Contest
Interesting. Kong might pass Lego Batman and ruin the top 5. But now, though way too early to know where the weekend will go, F8 could fall below Logan in the end if it doesn't hit 100M OW. Which would also wreck the top 5 predictions.

Re: KJ's Winter/Spring 2017 Box Office Contest
It will be very close between Kong and Batman but a lot is riding on Kong's hold this weekend. Logan is looking at $230m-$235m finish which depending on the weekend could be enough to down Fate. Either way it looks like this will be the closest Top 5 game but eventually the streak will continue.

I'll post the results for this game once one of these scenarios happens: -It becomes clear than The Fate of the Furious won't pass Logan. -It becomes clear that The Boss Baby will pass Kong: Skull Island. -It becomes clear than The Fate of the Furious will pass Logan, and The Boss Baby won't pass Kong: Skull Island. Algren needs one of the first 2 conditions to happen in order to win.

Re: KJ's Winter/Spring 2017 Box Office Contest
I am also more confident that The Boss Baby will pass Kong. Currently at $156m TBB had an almost $6m weekend and while Kong is still kicking with $0.5m weekend its total is at $166m, there is literally no competition for TBB aside from Fox's own mid-tier hit Wimpy Kid whereas there are action movies every week from here on for Kong to take away its audience. Congrats Algren for the win.

Hehe I am not. There is just no way for one of these two to not happen. Fate was sealed well before with its modest WoM and poor reviews and its running more than $12m behind Fast 6 which would make it less than $222m for sure and Logan seems to finish with $226m but even if Fate somehow manages great legs from here on TBB will surpass Kong for sure.

zwackerm wrote: Boss Baby will pass Kong and possibly Lego Batman. Fast 8 will just pass Logan. Fate is currently $12m behind with a smaller weekend. With exactly the same run as Fast 6 it will get to $226m and Logan will mostly still pass that number. We know that its running behind F6 which also had the benefit of June weekdays so I just don't see it getting past $225m. The best case scenario for Fate would be to have a multiplier of 2 from this weekend similar to Fast 6 which would get it to $224m still lower than Logan.
