God where has this kind of marketing been all this time? I got straight chills throughout that whole spot. More of this type of marketing from Disney, and I might be convinced that this could still possibly top Endgame for the number 1 domestic spot of the year, although I'm not quite as confident as Rev is in $1B domestic lol.

Re: The Lion King (live-action) over 750m domestic club
$750m is pretty steep. I can see it joining the 700 club (that was a great tv program by the way) though.
What a year for Disney.
$700m+ Endgame Lion King Episode 9 maybe
$400m+ Toy Story 4 Frozen 2
However it shakes out you are looking at 5 films over $400m in one year, by one studio.
Even Aladdin and Dumbo average out to almost $600m WW between the two of them...smoothing over Dumbo’s losses.

Disney is the only thing keeping the box office afloat right now.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow. Showtimes are showing and the smount of showtimes for Thursday night is similar to Endgame, ridiculous amount.

Man hopefully I am able to get up early enough to get those tickets, because I already know showtimes at a certain theater I want to go to will be sold out within minutes just like with Endgame. Looking at the amount of showtimes this is getting it looks like Disney is definitely expecting huge things from it.

I’m now thinking 5th biggest opening, ~$215M, but with weaker than expected legs due to the animation looking weird.

I know all the signs are pointing to a mega-movie but I just can't get past the dead-eyed animals, as impressive as they look. An actual realistic-looking animal talking and singing is more disturbing than cute to me. I haven't seen a single still from any part of this movie that shows them conveying actual emotion. It's very uncanny valley.

I think the use of the music is what's pushing this. I think this is so unnecessary but everytime I see the trailer the music gets me.

Alice In Wonderland, Cinderella, Maleficent, Jungle Book, Beauty & the Beast, Dumbo, Aladdin... Hollywood is a business. It’s very, very necessary.

Ads are starting to come hard and heavy. Also, it was revealed Beyonce wrote and sings an new, original song in this.
Gonna win the year.

Re: The Lion King (live-action) over 750m domestic club
I know I shouldn't doubt this, The Lion King is the biggest animated movie culturally and its getting a shiny new update.... but I still doubt this. Especially this summer, I feel like box office audiences has been voting with dollars, affirming what I and many others have been feeling.... people won't just go see a movie anymore if it feels unnecessary, uninspired, manipulative, purely profit driven.
Do y'all feel the hype with this like there was for Beauty and the Beast (2017)? I do not. For that movie I knew people in real life that were excited to see one of their favorite animated movies realized in live action. Perhaps it's because I'm two years older as is everyone else I know, but I haven't heard a peep of excitement about this from real humans I know on Earth.
I'm not doubting it will make big money. Disney's marketing + the name brand + severe dearth of other things to see will help ensure that. But I think it will fall $200m+ short of anything like $750m. In my eyes a good total would be passing BatB's $504m. I'd be thrilled with lower.

also, I haven't paid much attention to the advertising, but are there any shots of the characters actually talking / interacting? Seems like it's all been voiceover... which doesn't speak well to the uncanny African valley Barrabas mentioned....

Re: The Lion King (live-action) over 750m domestic club
I went in on this in November when the first teaser came out. I'm still in at 750M+. I know that the marketplace has been underperforming from expectations recently, but I think that will only help The Lion King. It's biggest issue could be Spider-Man potentially breaking out ahead of it. There's no BIG competition for it for families until Maleficent in October. (Dora, Angry Birds aren't exactly BIG competition). Legs should not be an issue. I can't imagine Disney messing this up. If the movie isn't good they are leaving hundreds of millions on the table. If it's awesome and inspires repeat viewings, I could see it challenging Endgame for the year crown. For opening weekend I'm thinking more than double Toy Story 4. Maybe a 250M opening. If it opens less than 200M somebody messed up.

People don’t seem much more excited for this than for Toy Story 4, at least of everyone I know personally.
I’m thinking 175m OW, 500 total. I won’t let supposed tracking upset my prediction

Re: The Lion King (live-action) over 750m domestic club
The biggest stumbling block is the animation to "live action" transition is not compelling enough for some audiences. Its a hurdle that can stunt it from being $800m+ HUGE. It will still be massive though.

Re: The Lion King (live-action) over 750m domestic club
Ok after watching that I'm finally able to pinpoint what about it is so weird and off-putting to me: I can't immediately tell when the animals are speaking. Because they made it so realistic, they don't open their mouths much when speaking so I can't tell where the sound is coming from immediately the way I would with a human being or an animated character (who always have exaggerated mouth movements) and it throws things off. It's even more apparent in the short clip of them singing Hakuna Matata; my brain is accustomed to humans singing, who open their mouths widely, and animated characters doing the same, and yet their lips are barely moving and it feels so weird. Total uncanny valley thing going on.
