I'm in. Love the teaser. James Earl Jones really seals it for me, and the animals look amazing.

Side note...

Captain Marvel, Avengers 4, Aladdin, Toy Story 4, Lion King, Frozen 2, Star Wars Ep 9. That's 3B+ just at the dom box office for Disney, and they have others that will add to that. Until this teaser I didn't really believe Aladdin, TS4, and TLK would all end up in 2019.

And then when they add Fox in.

Aladdin vs. Predator better happen.

God, I saw a lot of people crying over this teaser today. This is going to be big. The only reason I'm still out is because it's a Summer release. Disney's biggest problem is they will have 5 600+ earners in a single year. This would have killed in Thanksgiving next year, but Frozen 2 is already there.

It has a good chance for the 4th of July Record though.

No it's being released mid/late July.

But I agree - they shouldn't have shoe horned it into the tail end of such a huge summer.

At a minimum they should not have released it 2 months after Aladdin.

But even so - it still has a good shot at being No.1 for the year.

Their schedule is insane, the biggest of any studio ever. In a year already packed with other huge films from other studios, it will demonstrate just how much the global box office market can accommodate. That being said, I think Aladdin and Star Wars will potentially be a lot smaller than anticipated. Aladdin is coming out after two mega films (Avengers and Pokemon; yes, Pokemon will be massive), and Solo showed there are severe problems with the new Star Wars brand.

Big films can co-exist. Happened many times before, and they feed off each other, so I never really get this idea that many big films means some will fail. They fail because they are bad films or because people are not interested, not because of too much supply.

Yep - release films people want to see and they will come. October this year is just one example.

Very true. It's not like it used to be and there is room for them. But Avengers 4, Aladdin, Toy Story 4 and The Lion king being released within 3 months does feel a little careless. But that's just Disney.

During that same period you have the Secret Life of Pets 2, The X-men Movie, a new Men in Black, Godzilla, Spiderman, Conjuring 3, and Tarantino's new movie. That is a stacked 9 weeks. And there are at least 4 more solid films not even worth mentioning that could do well. I think it's a going to be an awesome summer. But dam it feels like 2003 or 2014 summer again. This might be the summer where MoviePass might really show it's strength.

And once again August looks like a wasteland.

I don't know about that, but $200M+ is definitely happening. It's going to be crazy seeing what this and Avengers 4 do next year, especially on OW and OS/WW. I fell like it's going to be pretty much a repeat of this year with BP/IW, but the DOM and OS grosses should be much bigger for TLK.

If this does $2 billion WW then Star Wars IX will dip below $1 billion. It's just karma. There's no way one studio can dominate that much.

Many worldwide hits (those of the $2b region) need China to get there, and I'm not seeing China care about TLK at all. It's not in their pop-culture history.

Oh, The Lion King was super popular when it was first released in China (made 41m RMB, ranked 1st for animated film and 5th overall that year), and the film has remained popular since, currently #57 on Douban's all-time top 250 list. $300m+ should easily happen there.

I'm IN

That stupid teaser and I say that lovingly is getting me choked up everytime with that damn music. It's like the SW theme. Ridiculously iconic.

Having seen the teaser I can say confidently that LK will print money but $750m seems too high a bar, especially in a crowded market.

It will get close though. $730m. I’m prepared to be very wrong.

This needs to push to November 2019 and move Frozen out to 2020. Disney has an embarrassment of riches. It can’t get out of its own way!

It looks gorgeous, but almost like it’s trying to hard to look real to be real. It works though. 750m seems to be in reach.

You guys are fucking insane. This could make $330 million and that will be great for it. Maybe even $400 million. But to say now with such certainty that it will become the 2nd highest-grossing run ever is mad. It's Excel-level of insanity.

Remakes don't break records.

The Beauty and the Beast remake is a top twelve domestic grosser with 504m.

The Lion King is a significantly more popular and iconic property. We've talked about the performance of the original and the brand's everlasting popularity via the Broadway show, re-releases, merchandising, television series, etc. It's not just a Disney animation movie, it's THE Disney animation movie.

Is that enough to earn it 246m more than BATB? I don't know! But then this club wouldn't be any fun if I did.

This thing is gonna have 400 million in less than 2 weeks. Everyone and their granny are going to be watching this.

I think this will make more than BATB just based on the fact The Lion King was more popular in its day, but I definitely think a BATB remake was more justified in people’s eyes because of the human characters, and that’s will hurt this a little bit at least.
